from RevtoRev to CTC

Ladies,

I am looking to see what you ladies thinks...
My youngest daughter started in HOD three years ago. She started in BIGGER HEARTS and we loved HOD! So the next year I brought all three of my children over from Sonlight to HOD. With Sonlight I was doing two Cores and I did not feel I could do two programs again.

So that year I brought over my two oldest and I bumped up my youngest to RTR to be with her sisters. This means she skipped Preparing and CTC. (I know this is not recommended!!!) I know it wasn't the best but she was able to keep up with 95% of the work. I did change her writing and narrations. She was allowed to do less sentences. She also does Saxon math and a different science. She followed the guide very well and understands most of what she read. She even asked if she could do more for narrations. She really wanted to follow the guide!

This year we all headed into RevtoRev and she again is doing very well. She does all the reading by herself and loves the books. It does take her a little longer to finish her work. She sometimes will ask what something means and she is willing to look up new words. I have enjoyed having all the girls together.

Here is my dilemma... if she continues at the pace she is on she will be in the Geography guide in 7th grade, World History in 8th grade and the two final guides for 9th and 10th. For high school transcripts I will still need to have a World History and Geography. That will leave me to create two years of high school. With this in mind I am thinking about having her go back and do CTC with extensions and expecting more writing than the guide asks her for. She will continue with her math and Rod & Staff. I know it's not the best but it would give her a year to grow-up some before heading into the high school guides. As I have just started the planning process for my first high school student I realize I REALLY don't want to write two high school guides for my youngest. Skill wise, she can fit into the next guide. Age wise she is about 1/2 year younger than the guide suggests.

What would you ladies do?

I am in the same situation. I thought about splitting them up this year, but then I decided against it. I have worked hard on their skills, and they are doing well. It is easier for me to combine, so my decision (for now) is to keep them combined at least until the younger ones actually hit the high school material {so through MTM}. At that point I will decide whether I want to fill in a year or not to save the HOD high school guides for high school.

There's always the option of going slower in the same guide for her. Drop it back to half speed and maybe read aloud the extensions to her, allowing her to do the assignments with them so she still gets a good amount of work daily.
or.there's the option.of using 11th and 12th for.dual enrollement to earn high school and college credit at the same time. Many Christian colleges have this as an online.option as well. Not all colleges are equal of course, even those that call themselves Christian will not be anywhere up to par with the faith building with Biblical truths across all subjects. AIG has a good list on.their site of true to.their word colleges.

What would you ladies do?

I would have her back up and do CTC with extensions. I think she will love it, as she will truly be able to follow the guide and thrive with everything in it! She sounds like a delightful learner that enjoys doing all a guide is asking her to do. By doing CTC, she will be able to do it all just as it is written and flourish. Honestly, the following year, I'd have her do RevtoRev, but you can cross that bridge when you get to it. She could do all of it, including the science, understand all that she read, and do all of the writing/skills suggested to the "nth". I bet she would be quite independent with this plan, and she would enjoy feeling like she was doing it all so well. You can have a meeting time with her to go through her work. We began this in CTC, and it took only around 1 hour or so for everything. I did my teaching time and asked any follow-ups from each of the boxes of plans. We have continued this through RevtoRev and plan to do it in MTMM. My ds gets his hot tea and snack, and I grab my coffee (strong ), and we enjoy our meeting time so much. This will be an easy way to let her have the guide as a Student Planner, but keep your tabs on each box of work, while getting in your teaching time with her for the "T" boxes. Just an idea - HTH!
