Suggestions for a newbie on school supplies

Post by princesadorkess » Tue Apr 03, 2012 5:19 pm

I've just purchased Bigger for my dd after doing a lot of research and we are both very excited to get started! I was hoping that while we wait for our packages to arrive, we could get some suggestions of basic school supplies to have on hand. Notebooks, index cards, post its, common art/science experiment stuff.. etc. Any suggestion would be great! (We're fairly new to homeschooling so don't assume we know the obvious please!)
Thanks so much! :D

We're using Bigger this year.

They have composition notebooks for English, dictation, vocabulary (you can also use index cards for vocab). We use cardstock for notebooking pages and have a binder with index tabs to separate subjects and clear page covers as well (If you don't use these, you'll want a 3 hole punch). They also have index card sprial books for writing Bible verses.

For art, you need paint, color pencils, markers, glue, clay, scissors, construction paper, regular paper.

Household supplies we often use are saran wrap, foil, wax paper, flashlights, salt, balls, globe/map (we often use a large atlas), masking tape...I love how simple the materials we use are! Post-its are nice for keeping track of your places in the guide...I've also been writing our weekly extension readings on a post it and use it as a bookmark. Several bookmarks are nice as well since you'll be reading several books at once.

Math items (if you are doing the hands-on lessons) often include money (I keep a small can of loose change on hand) as well as buttons, cereal, raisins, etc. for manipulatives...these are easy to substitute with whatever you have on hand.

I love the cardstock idea! I was trying to figure out how to do the notebooking without page protectors. That's a great idea!

Thanks so much! We already have most of that so that's great! Looks like we just need the stuff for notebooking and the index cards! Cheaper on the pocketbook :)
We'll be able to dig in as soon as the packages arrive! :D

Very exciting to be on the brink of starting Bigger Hearts! :D We sure loved that treatment of American history. I'm not sure if this will help or not, but here's a link to a post I did with pics of us getting ready to do Bigger Hearts...

Hi Julie,
after looking at your pictures I was wondering what type of binder that is that you have pictured with the comp books it says it is for memory verses - trying to get an idea of what we can use next year when my older moves into Bigger

Thanks

It's actually a 4 x6 photo album that I got at Walmart. It works great for 4 x 6 index cards! They had quite a few colors, and I thought they looked special. HTH - have fun choosing! :D
