Definition of an "emerging reader"?

Post by Amey » Thu May 08, 2008 11:21 am

Can someone give me some guidelines for what would designate a child as an "emerging reader"? I will only have the LHFHG Guidebook and materials, but my (6 next mo.) son is already reading three and four letter words and sounding out others. Do I need to add some of these early reading books..or am I okay with what I have? (I have alot of read alouds already, just not sure how many of them he could read on his own once we get to that point.)

TIA! :D

I think my five year old is an emerging reader. He picked Frog and Toad are Friends out of the bookcase the other day and carried it with him all day to read it. He made out every word ♥♥, but didn't retain 100% of what he read. I think that is my understanding of an emerging reader.

My DD is sounding out 3 and 4 letter words. I think when we've done all the phonics readers (Bob books and such), that's when we'll move on to emerging readers.

Amey,

Our six year olds are on the same track. We are finishing our phonics and then going onto the emerging readers. I am going to send you a private message because I know space is probably an issue for you being a missionary.

But also I will just say here that the emerging readers are books that are arranging in increasing reading order and broken up in bite size pieces with comprehension questions so your child can narrate what they have read. The great thing about them is you can really move in a logical progression and know they are getting it with very little effort on your part. It allows you to really know they are on track and moving solidly forward. They have been a huge blessing for us with my struggling reader. I do not know on what the official answer is when to start but we are starting after we finish The Reading Lesson because that seems to put you right on reading level for it. 8)
