Revival to Revolution Order Question

Post by redapples123 » Wed Mar 28, 2012 2:42 pm

Hello-I am new to HOD! We are trying pieces of it now and have "fallen in love" I would like to order ALL of Revival to Revolution for my 8th grade son. Do I order the Basic package for read-alouds AND the Extension Package for his independent reading? ALSO, we are going to try the Drawn into Reading program would I ALSO buy him a book pack for that too? OR could he use the Extension package to complete the Reading program.

We are going to use Bigger Hearts for our 3rd grade daughter and I'm not sure how many read-alouds I can fit in?

I appreciate any input--this is all new for us and I'm trying to figure the packages.

Hello Brittany,
For Rev to Rev you need:
The Economy Package (includes the Rev to Rev guide and all history spines, Bible study book, music appreciation, student notebook pages, histury CDs, and the state study and the signers if you choose to do those, which I love personally :) ) All these books are assigned to the student to read independently as scheduled in the daily plans with follow-ups such as written narrations, art projects, timeline entries, and oral narrations
The Science- choose option 1 or option 2-option 1 includes intermediate science kit for ages 11-13, 3 days a week; option 2 includes advanced science kit for an 8th or 9th grader 5 days a week)
The Basic Package read-alouds-you can choose to have your student read these to himself rather than reading aloud to him if he is a strong reader.
The Extension Package-these are scheduled as independent reading in the appendix of the Rev to Rev guide along with follow-up activity suggestions for an 8th or 9th grader and is optional, but available if your student needs greater challenge than the rest of the curriculum as is.
The Exciting World of Creative Writing
DITHOR and an age-appropriate book package (or you can get books for this at the library to economize)-this is the literature study and cannot be completed using the Basic or Extension Packages which are part of History
Rod and Staff English probably level 6 (HOD recommends completing Rod & Staff English 6 by the end of 8th grade)
Math (if choosing Singapore or Discovering Mathematics, use the free placement tests on the Singapore site to place your student)
Hope that helps!

Wow! I really appreciate you taking the time to answer this for me! So...would my son be reading both the basic hisotry books and the extension books at the same time? AND in addition he would be reading another book for the DITHOR program too?

The rest of your recommendations sound just like I was thinking. I'm not sure what option to pick for science. He will be in 8th grade 13-14 yrs old and likes science. Would option 1 be enough? I'm not familiar with this science program but it looks like he would LOVE it!

Thanks so much for your help!

People use the basic and extensions in different ways-some use the extensions instead of the basic, some use the extensions in addition to the basic. I would recommend trying Rev to Rev as written, without the extensions, first to see how that goes-it is very meaty! If it becomes apparent that your son needs a greater challenge and higher level reading material, you can add the extensions later.
Yes, for DITHOR he would be reading another book-it sounds like a lot, but HOD has everything scheduled into manageable chunks, with the follow-up activities providing interaction with the books and ensuring retention :)
For science I'm not sure which would be best-keep in mind that option has science 5 days a week, and the 5th day usually includes a major project and lab report. My dd 14 has so far independently built and performed lab experiments with a racer, a huge wooden glider and a small steam boat :) It depends on what you think your son is ready for.

Dear Lourdes,
Thanks you once again--you were so kind to give your guidance! I am starting to see the organization of how this works. You have cleared up the confusion I was having--I see there are options as to how the reading packages may work for us! I'm glad to hear that it is organized in manageable chunks.

I am VERY excited for the science and thanks for the link! I just shared with my son what your dd completed in the science and he wants to start now!!! He is finishing up Apologia's General Science online course this year. So this will be a different feel for him.
Kindest regards,
Brittney
