Dictation

Post by Robin Ruth » Mon Mar 26, 2012 6:39 pm

I have a few questions about dictation. We are completely new to homeschooling and are not using CM style right now. I will be using BHFHG in the fall with my dd, who will be 9yo/4gr. I am trying to ease CM style into school now to prepare her. We are doing copywork using Aesop's Fables (in cursive) and I'm wondering how to work in dictation. I know there is Dictation Day by Day in the appendix of BHFHG to use, but I'm wondering which level/grade it is and if it's appropriate for her age since she's at the upper end of the range(I have not purchased anything yet)? Can I use a lower level of DDBD with her now? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!! :D

I remember when dictation was pretty new to me too - most of us didn't do dictation in our schools growing up! :D HOD gives the most clear-cut explanation for how to do dictation I have read, and believe me, there is a lot of misinformation out there when it comes to how to do dictation the way CM meant it to be done. I think it is a great idea to ease dd into dictation. Level 2 is the first level of dictation. If I were you, I'd just get the BHFHG manual and start dictation. Reading the section about how to do dictation in BHFHG's appendix will help get it started right, and you'll need the manual anyway. HTH! :D
