Igniting your Writing

Post by SMiles » Wed Mar 14, 2012 12:57 am

Hello,
I am wondering if anyone can explain where IYW fits into HOD. I see that the catalog says it is suitable for use with DITHOR, but I am not entirely sure how it is used. Could it be used as a substitution for Write with the Best in CTC? Just wondering as we stumbled over WWTB a bit. :?

Thanks for any information,
Sherry

Writing is not my gift-I prefer science and math so I will try to express my thoughts. IYW is usually done if you only use DITHOR and don't use a guide or if you use DITHOR and are beyond the age range of younger guides like a 10 yo in Beyond or 12 yo in Bigger as these don't have age appropriate writing. You would be supplementing the writing in these guides. Starting with the Preparing guide there are directions for written narration directions and I think that is enough writing when paired with R & S Grammar. Additional writing is included in the extension reading for Preparing guide, RTR, and Ref to Rev guide if dc are older than the age recommended and using the extensions. I think that HOD guides do an excellent job of teaching writing if done as written and each guide steps up a notch (or two) in required writing skills. There is not any guidance to complete IYW so you are on your own as far as figuring out a schedule. It is recommended to follow the guide as far as number of days completing writing, so for example CTC has this language arts schedule: Day 1 Dictation, DITHOR, R & S; Day 2 has DITHOR and Write with the Best; Day 3 has Dictation and WWTB; Day 4 has Dictation, R & S, and DITHOR. The manual says you can substitute your own writing program which would normally be WWTB on Day 2 and Day 3 so you would do IYW on Day 2 and Day 3 instead. HYH Tammy

Thanks for the input. I appreciate you taking time to give a picture of where IYW should be used. We did use WWTH in CTC, but it was a bit of a struggle so I was looking at other options. We are really loving Medieval Based History Writing Lessons so I wondered if IYW would be more like that.

Thanks again. :D

All,
I had a question about Igniting your Writing also. Hope you don't mind me asking on this thread. So, Igniting your Writing does not NEED to be added to the HOD curriculum? I will be starting dd, who will be 9 in July, with BHFHG along with DIHOR (level 2/3) and R&S (English 3) in the fall. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Also, if you have any other writing programs you might suggest (if it is needed). Thanks!! :D

I did include IYW with Bigger with my late 4th/early 5th grader. Now she's in 5th with Preparing and we stopped IYW. I think there's plenty of writing without it. And she's my BIG writer. :)
