A couple questions on placement?

Post by 6blessings » Tue Mar 20, 2012 6:40 pm

I'll be using HOD with all my dc starting in the fall. :D I've used Preparing, CTC and currently using RTR with my 10 year old twins. My husbands loves HOD (he's a SAHD, who helps homeschool the kids) and has insisted using it with my younger kiddos.

This will be our line up for next year..
My then 4 year old will do LHTH, R&S Preschool and A list of read alouds.

My 5 year old (6 in November) places completely in Beyond so that's what I think I'm going to use. Also will use Singapore Math 2 (we're doing 1 this year). Will this be okay? My 7 year old will do Beyond also with SM2. Both will do Emerging Readers.

My 8 year old (9 in Dec) is where I'm the most confused on. He places in Bigger or even Preparing but I do not feel he's ready for either of them. He is advanced but very immature. He would hate to be in a different guide then my 5 and 7 year old. We've always done everything except LA and Math together. I've looked around and found Old Fashioned Education year 5. It's the same history period and I thought I could have him read those independently (like he would extensions). He would also do DITHOR 2/3, CLE Bible 3, Singapore 4 and something for LA (haven't decided yet our current LA hasn't been a good fit). I think this sounds great for him, it would keep him in the same guide as my 2 younger kids but I also feel Old Fashioned Education Year 5 will challenge him. Next year in Bigger he'll do the extensions. What do you think?

My 10 year old twins (11 in July) will continue with Rev to Rev. :D

We also do Latin and a few other subjects (still haven't decided which ones we'll do next year)

Thanks in advance! I can't wait until the fall! :D

You and your dh are doing such a great job of meeting each of your dc's needs and sharing the HOD journey together! :D I just wanted to compliment you on that impressive partnership first - way to go! :D Second, I think your plan for your 8 yo makes total sense. I am not familiar with Old Fashioned Education, but as long as it is extending the readings in a way that will not cause overload, I think it sounds like a good way to extend. Something to remember is your ds is only 8 yo turning 9 yo, which technically from a placement point of view is still within the suggested target age range for Beyond. :D I'm not sure, but perhaps Carrie's response in this thread about a 9 turning 10 yo doing Beyond may help somewhat, but keep in mind, this child is a complete year older than your ds, so really, extensions are probably not necessary other than those you feel best fit his needs. :D

Thanks for the response! Sorry it took awhile for me to respond!

I know he's not far off from the suggested age range but he definitely wouldn't place in Beyond if it was just for him. I want to challenge him. He loves to read so I thought I could just hand him the books and he'll read them. I don't think I'll have him do much more than that for history. :D He does love CLE Bible so that's why we're keeping that. There's also a list of suggested books in the appendix right?

I hope I'm not adding to much! But I want to make sure he's not getting by with out being challenged, iykwim?
