Need more review with grammar lessons

Post by Natreez » Wed May 07, 2008 10:59 am

I have been noticing my son seems to require a lot more repitition when it comes to grammar than what he's been getting. We've been using an English Primer with very short and gentle lesson which he responds well to when doing the lesson but then forgets the entire lesson by the next day or sometimes even later that day.

Does anyone know if the grammar from Rod & Staff repeats the lessons or has any review? If not, does anyone have any suggestions for grammar books that do offer review or more repitition? (Ex- we learned about too-to-two in lesson 42 which he understood very well...but then by lesson 62 he could not remember what we had learned.) I've noticed this scenario happening quite often.

Thanks for your thoughts!

I have not used Rod and Staff yet, but I think there's been some mention on this board that there is a good amount of repetition. I'm sure some of the ladies who use it currently will chime in here to help you out! :)

What I really like about Rod and Staff English is the oral review included in the lessons that reviews previously studied topics. This has helped my children to retain what they have learned.

With the R&S you can also buy very inexpensive workbooks for each level with practice exercises for many of the lessons in the book. I typically used these a day or two after a concept was covered for an additional review for my kids.

Jen, do these exercises line up with the lesson in the main text?

Thanks!

Yes! The TM, I believe, even tells you which worksheet to use with a lesson. Not all lessons have the worksheets, but many do--for example, in the 7th grade text there are 125 lessons and 59 worksheets. They are labeled as Extra Practice in the lesson plan section of each lesson in the TM. Also, the hardback TM includes the answer key for this worksheet book, as well as the key for the tests.

That sounds great! So this does apply to the Rod & Staff grammar recommended in Bigger right? Thanks for all of your responses!! I really appreciate everyone's help.

Hmmm...that's grade 2, right? I'm not sure if the written review worksheets are available for grade 2, that said however, there are excellent oral reviews built into every lesson of grade 2, iirc. It's been awhile since I used grade 2  The only TM I have at home is grade 7--my friend has all the rest of mine--I'll get them back from her as needed to use with our youngest. It does apply to all levels 3rd-8th grades, just not sure about 2nd.
