Little Hearts for His Glory:
Emmett and I are just having such fun together in LHFHG! We especially enjoyed our re-enactment of our Storytime read aloud. Emmett got to choose 3 of his favorite stuffed animals for this. One was Peter Rabbit, one was Shadow the Weasel, and one was Reddy Fox. The brown blanket was the briar patch, and the pillow in the center was the little water hole. Reddy Fox and Shadow the Weasel had cooked up a sly plan to trick Peter Rabbit. Shadow was slim enough to slip into the briar patch where Peter lived, and Reddy Fox planned to be waiting on the outside for Shadow to chase Peter out of the patch. However, Peter knew how much Shadow disliked water, so he simply ran to one side of the water hole, and when Shadow was nearing him, he hopped over the water to the other side. Back and forth Peter hopped, until Shadow finally grew frustrated and attempted to hop over the water himself. Of course he didn't make it, and got all muddy, and then worse, he got lost in the briar patch. By the time he dragged himself out of the briar patch, Reddy Fox could see Shadow was very cross indeed, and hastily made his way home.
Emmett squealed with delight every time he made Shadow plop in the water hole - I say every time because we acted this out not once, not twice, but THREE times. Emmett LOVED it that much!
In history, Emmett is learning so much, and every day he gets better at answering the comprehension questions in the Family Time Bible, or at beginning to orally narrate about what was read. His wheels are definitely turning, as he often asks many questions about God, and various Bible character in history at night when I am reading to him before bed. He said the other night, "I wouldn't trust Saul if I were David either. He was trying to kill him, Mom! Saul was a shady guy." He also continues to ask many questions, like, "How could God make alllllllllll this? What did He use? How did He use nothing?" I am loving seeing my little one's heart being opened to knowing more about the Lord.
Everyone joined in for Emmett's Bible activity of acting out David's singing and dancing at the return of the ark this week. We each had instruments and I beat the drum to a slow, medium, or fast pace, as they followed marching to my drum beat. I had a blast going very s-l-o-w-l-y, and then racing around. They were all laughing and having a wonderful time, and I was too!
One other activity the boys all joined in on was Emmett's 20 questions he could ask about what object I had hidden in the brown paper bag. One by one they all came in the room and helped Emmett out with his questions, and when it came time to guess what was in the bag, Emmett shouted 'It's my Annie Clarabelle!' Annie Clarabelle is what Emmett named his little stuffed animal, and he was right - Annie Clarabelle was the object in the bag!
Emmett had his Bible verse memorized almost right away this time. The Hide 'Em in Your Heart CD makes it so simple. He hopped up on his chair to get some extra height for tossing the tissue, as the activity had him say as much of his Bible verse as possible before it hit the floor. He laughed and laughed when he threw the tissue on me. I love the way HOD makes memorization of Scripture fun from the very start!
Another activity Emmett enjoyed was the self-portrait. He looked at himself in the mirror, and then tried to draw what he saw. The discussion questions in the guide really helped lead him to noticing details, and I helped him with the general shapes of parts of his face as well. The second part of the activity had him describe what he looked liked "inside" his heart, and he came up with some great descriptions for himself that were spot-on... cheerful, loving, smiling, sharing, giving - all so true character traits of my sweet little Emmett!
In math we continue to work on patterns, and he is really understanding it now. He was even able to make his own patterns this week. I like how we began with hands-on work and then moved to more written type work. By then, he had it down...
These were just a few highlights of the week. Emmett really enjoys it all. We are taking it slow, and really savoring LHFHG together. This is my third and last time to teach LHFHG - I'm making it last.
In Christ,
Julie

Preparing Hearts for His Glory:
This week I decided I needed to do a better job of really showing Riley what kind of work he is capable of, and encouraging him to do his very best. Riley really does love to color and create, but it is interesting how those natural talents don't necessarily transpire into him being able to make a good notebooking page. Knowing how large to draw things, how to balance writing and drawing on a page to make a nice overall appearance, how to use vivid colors and outlining, how to write neatly in a straight line without an actual line to write upon, how to label things, and how to read directions carefully so everything turns out well are allllll notebooking skills that need to be taught. So, now that we are quite far into PHFHG, I decided it was time to up the level of craftsmanship when it comes to notebooking type assignments. This would have been too much at first, but now he is ready for it.
We started with his coral reef notebooking page because the One Small Square books are beautiful notebooking type pages themselves. We talked about reading through each of the PHFHG directions carefully, as they provide excellent guidance for creating lovely notebooking pages. Then, we talked about mentally planning the layout of the page, where things would go, and what scale they would be. He was so pleased with how it turned out, and so was I!
For vocabulary, I started having Riley do 3 cards this week. He had been doing 2. We talked about what he could draw and making it more colorful. He also is now able to use the words properly in sentences of his own, which was the part of this activity that was the hardest for him. His R & S English lessons have also helped him understand what a complete sentence sounds like.
In history, Riley enjoyed making a map. He labeled various routes, and he did a super job of making his key. I like how the younger HOD guides like PHFHG prepare dc for the more difficult mapping in RTR on up.
The step by step history projects in PHFHG are teaching Riley to follow steps sequentially. For some reason, Riley always wants to start with the end. If he reads through multiple instructions to complete something, he often wants to start with the last instruction. I'm sure it's because it's the last thing he read, but still, it doesn't work. He is getting better and better about following multiple step directions, and he even has begun looking ahead to the next several days' worth of completing the project, as he now knows it will take 3 days to complete, and knowing what's coming next helps him plan how to do the first part. HUGE progress! Here is Riley's brooch, from start to finish (can you tell Emmett liked it too? )...
I've noticed how learning to work in a sequence for HOD's hands-on projects has also helped Riley be able to write in a sequence for retelling his stories in his written narrations. He used to do the same thing with these - start with the end. He now does a better job of "rewinding, like to the start of a videotape" as I have told him , to retell from the start what was read. The guidance PHFHG gives to help dc improve their written narrations is so helpful! I can see improvements every day, slowly but surely...
Science continues to be such a favorite subject of Riley's - as well as the entire family's - especially this week. Riley made coral polyps out of marshmallows, melted chocolate, sprinkles, and gum strips (I subbed in a piece of gum cut in 1/4's instead of string licorice or ramen noodles - HOD makes substituting easy - I can always get the gist of what we are going for, and sub in if need be without ruining the project ). Riley made a coral polyp for everyone, and everyone was glad!
The notebooking activities have helped Riley improve his science lab forms too. It's amazing how many things are inter-connected in HOD. One skill builds another, and that skill builds another, and they all work together to help move my dc along in their learning beautifully. Love that!
Cheerful Cursive - I cannot sing the praises of that cursive program enough. One year of Cheerful Cursive, and each of our dc have neat cursive to show for it. I am not super picky about handwriting, as I feel it is not logical in today's ever increasing type-written text, but I still think legible, overall neat handwriting is quite nice...
What a great week of big strides in learning! Not all weeks are like this, but this week is definitely the accumulation of many weeks of learning how to do work well, step by step. Hope you all had a good one too!
In Christ,
Julie

Re: Week In Review Mar 5 - Mar 9
Revival to Revolution:
Attack... attack... attack! Wyatt's history this week was full of battles - the Zulu's, the Boers, the English, the Germans, the French, the Austrians - it was a pretty exciting week! Wyatt is loving it, and he is becoming quite a history buff. His timeline continues to march on, and it acts as a great reminder of what he has read. He actually can narrate right from just looking at his timeline - I've seen him do it for my dh at night, long after the school day is done. It's exciting to see how HOD progresses dc in their narration skills in such a way that retention is ever increasing. I remember reading that Charlotte Mason said as dc grow older, they should be able to narrate upon a reading long after they read it - even weeks. I truly was not sure this would ever really happen - but it is! I think the combination of excellent living books HOD chooses, and the vivid visual appeal of the HOD History Student Notebooks all work together to put a stamp on our dc's memories that can be recalled again and again, even at later dates.
Wyatt's written narrations have shown much improvement over the years. From PHFHG, when he began them, to now in RevtoRev, the improvement is huge. I would not have thought this much gain possible in this amount of time. I am always surprised at how HOD's step by step teaching takes a hard task and breaks it down into manageable amounts, and then one day, my dc are doing that hard task quite effortlessly, and I'm not even sure how or when it happened! I love teaching this way. There is such purpose, and it stretches out across the guides from year to year. One of the things Wyatt struggled with was putting a little life or personality into his written narrations. He really can be a "just the fact ma'am" kind of writer. It is just now I am seeing his personality showing up in his written narrations, and he is learning to add some zip and vitality to what he writes. I love it! Ironically my other ds is just the opposite. He has a little too much personality in his narrations (especially his oral ones), and not always enough facts - but he is incredibly entertaining. It is really fun to see how HOD's narrations encourage dc to develop in both areas over the years, and how each person's style is unique.
I see how this skill of writing narrations has spilled over to all of Wyatt's writing. For example, in DITHOR this week, he had to take on the perspective of one of the subordinate characters in his realistic fiction book, and write a letter from that character's point of view to the main character. He chose Jayden's point of view, who is a jockey with an opportunity to ride the horse Black Gold. He did a great job, and he did it independently. Looking back, I can see how the oral narrations way back in HOD's PHFHG prepared him for this, as well as the earlier DITHOR lessons on point of view. In PHFHG, he had to retell stories we'd read in history by taking on a character's point of view, and doing his oral narration as if he was that character. It's neat to see how that skill has been developed through the years.
Likewise, the vocabulary activities in Bigger Hearts and PHFHG made this vocabulary activity in DITHOR 6/7/8 a success for Wyatt to do independently. He followed the directions carefully, and he was able to call upon all of the skills he'd learned back in Bigger Hearts and PHFHG to do this activity well...
I like that Wyatt is having a blast with the history projects and science experiments too! Making the uno guitar was a hit, and little brother had to take a turn at strumming some too...
We had some laughs together learning and doing the Mexican Hat Dance too. I surprised him by hopping up and doing it with him. Yeah, I'm not THAT old - I can still move fairly fast once and awhile.
One very special moment for me as a mom was when Wyatt and I read R & S English together. I know, this doesn't seem like it would be a very special moment, but it was. There was one stanza of Fanny Crosby's "To God Be the Glory" in Wyatt's R & S English lesson, and Wyatt all of a sudden surprised me by breaking into song and singing the whole thing. He'd read about Fanny Crosby in HOD and knew this song all by heart. I joined in the singing, and I was all but in tears by the time we finished. It is such an incredible blessing to homeschool in this way. Moments like these would NEVER happen in a different setting, or with a different program. It just really blessed my soul.
Another fantastic week in RevtoRev - hope you had a good one too!

Julie

Week 8 in LHFHG
Stanley is really loves doing patterns too.He loved the game of knocking Goliath with a bean bag, except he was really struggling to hit the target.Nathan decided to 'help' Stanley and went and got his nerf guns and they had a wonderful time -even though it deviated from the bible story .One of the activities asked him to draw the temple, and I was delighted when Stanley added to the rectangle for the ark of the covenant two cherubim.
He is working slowly through the reading lesson .I loved it when I heard him sounding out THAT this week .

/Week 15
He wrote sentences.7 OF THEM ! What greater update could I give? One of the activities in R+S this week was to write a sentence with each of the pronouns. When we started Bigger,Nathan struggled to write a sentence.I love how R+S has taught the nuts and bolts to him.He can now see when a sentence is wrong too!He frequently asks why Math is so easy ! Its lovely to see him grow.

So here is something fun were doing with fractions since we hit them this week and I had one confused child on my hands... but with my handy dandy game she now thinks fractions are cool!

This is my first post sharing our week. I am hoping I can hold myself accountable to blog more by posting to these weekly updates. I've really enjoyed reading everyone's updates so far. We are really loving LHTH!
