Dithor
Dithor
Hello to all. My two older girls completed the emerging readers last year while working through Beyond. One dd was a bit slow to learn to read. She is easily overwhelmed by too many words on a page and small print. So in light of this I had decided not to do Dithor this year along side Bigger and just let her "catch up". She just finished reading The Chalk Box Kid at one chapter per day. She read this aloud to me and did very well and only needed help with a couple names here and there. Now I'm really anxious to try Dithor. So my question is how much reading per day is required? Do you think that her reading level is high enough to do Dithor successfully? The last thing that I want to do is frustrate her or overwhelm her and then have her give up. In general she tends to want to give up if something is too hard and I have a difficult time knowing when to push and when to back off. So far I have backed off when something is difficult but I don't want to do her a diservice by not challanging her enough. Sorry for rambling on here. Thanks for any thoughts on this. Gina

Re: Dithor
If she doesn't mind taking a longer time reading a book I'll tell you what I did my my oldest until she got more comfortable reading longer sections. We did DITHOR "half speed" she read every day, but only did the activities every other day, so 30 days worth of reading in each book, but still the 15 days worth of plans. Basically she started out reading 2-3 pages per day.

This is exactly what we did with a couple of my kiddos. It worked great, and after about 3 genres, they both decided on their own that it was time to "pick up the pace" and begin doing it as written. Easy, gentle way to transition into it!

Re: Dithor
Thanks ladies for the ideas and reassurance that she is ready. I think I'll try half speed as suggested. HOD has been such a blessing to us. It was just what my reluctant reader needed. I actually cannot believe that we finally made it to the Dithor milestone. My dd has so much confidence now that was really lacking before HOD. She doesn't mumble when she reads anymore and she tries new things that she was reluctant to try previously. Celebrating here. I misplaced my HOD catalog so can anyone tell me what the range of reading levels is for the DITHOR level 2 book pack. Thanks again.
