Post by wisdom4us » Sat May 03, 2008 7:45 pm

Hi. For those who have used Bigger, do you recommend getting the teacher's text for Preparing to Build: English 2?

You'd know the answers in that level, but I did begin to check it at the alphabetizing part of it - just because it was a little quicker than doing it in my head. But we're near the end of the year now (week 31), and I really rarely used the R & S guide. It's kind of a convenience thing - if you have the funds, and you think you'd find it convenient, you should get it. But, if you're looking to save some money, this is a pretty good way to do it. HTH!

How about for the 3rd grade set? I bought the student text, not here yet, but now I found a set with the TM. Should I buy it just for the TM and sell the extra student book, or make do with the student book? I am pretty good with grammar, well at least I was back when I was in school....

Thanks Julie,
I think I will just go with the student book now, I can always order the TM if I need to. :)

I was pretty good with grammar in school too, way back when!

For the 3rd. grade set, you could go either way - but by the 4th. grade set, you'll definitely want the manual.

HOD's comment on the English 3 Teacher's Manual is...
The Teacher's Manual is more necessary at this level as an answer key and for additional help with the lessons.

I'll probably get the TM for next year for English 3 - even though I did love grammar and did well with it back in the day! Not that we couldn't do the grammar - it's just that, who wants to work at it when there's a manual to help? Plus, it sounds like it gives more instruction by the third level. Maybe someone using English 3 now will comment? Those are just a few thoughts on it.

Ladies,

As my3sons mentioned the English 2 manual is easy to use without the teacher's manual. Once you get to English 3, there is a daily oral drill (and of course the answer key) that is very good to have. I also liked having the key for the diagramming!

By English 4, you'd want the daily oral drill part and answer key for sure. The oral drill is short and sweet and really does help review the concepts.

There is no oral drill provided in English 2, so it's just an answer key.

Blessings,
Carrie

You could definitely do it without the teachers guide especially for second but I have to say that I love having the teachers guide. I love the comments of what is the purpose and the little added things here and there. I also love that I do not have to think at all to correct no matter how little in reality that would be. I think that mostly comes from having four children on 3 levels R&S English. And I do correct all of it so we can make sure we are on track.

Do I need it for second? No. But it is just a little time saver for me. Second is not such a big deal but third would be for me and forget doing fourth without it. I start to question things myself on that level. Also actually there is oral drill in English 2. It is not a huge deal and not in every lesson but it is there. You definitely don't need it for that so much. I have two just finishing Level 2 and they are very competitive. Oral drill is a highlight for them. Simple stuff add the adjective to the sentence blank. And the lessons are pretty short in Level 2 as well. So for me since four kids total were using that level it has made sense to have the Teacher's guide.

What I love about R & S English is the oral drill/review provided in the TM. It is what has helped my sons to truly understand and retain what they have learned. I am currently using R & S 3 and R & S 4.
