HOD really does help teach Biblical Discernment

Post by LynnH » Wed Feb 01, 2012 7:04 am

Now that we are in our 3rd year of HOD and now that my ds is 12 1/2 I am really seeing him starting to read and look at things from a Biblical Worldview. I can't tell you how much this blesses my heart. Yesterday he was reading about Henry VIII and he was very upset with the life choices he made. He talked to me about how selfish Henry VIII was being and not doing things like God wanted him to do. What I have found interesting is that he also has learned through our readings of real peoples lives to give grace and understanding to those who try to live a Godly life, but mess up, just as we all do, and then repent. He seems to be able to look and see the pattern of behavior. I look back and think of discussions regarding King David and others and I can see where he has learned this. I also see him showing discernment when he watches things on TV. We were watching a documentary on birds that was very heavy on evolution. He made comments a few times about what they were saying and how that didn't line up with the bible and then he just asked to turn it off. He said it was hard to believe them on anything when so much of what they were saying didn't line up with the bible. I just love that at his age I see him weighing everything he reads, hears, or watches against what the bible says. I love how in HOD when he has read about beliefs that go against the bible Carrie has had him find a verse in the bible and see how the belief measures up to the Word of God. Also the Biblical Character studies in HOD really help him look for those traits in others and pushes him to pray and ask God to help him develop those traits himself. Anyway, I have been thinking about this the past few days and just wanted to say thank you to Carrie for helping me to find ways to help him look at life through a Biblical Worldview lens. As a young man in today's world I know that is going to be so important.

Thanks be to God--this is one of the main reasons we do HOD. Thanks for sharing. Our personal main goal with homeschooling is teaching biblical discernment and cultivating a heart for God and godliness. What a true blessing!

And THAT is why I stay with HOD! Yes, HOD is awesome academically and has wonderful resources, but there are other neat programs out there and wonderful resources that I could use to build a program myself. BUT, it is that which you mention, the naturally-infused godliness of this curriculum that really holds me here when other pretty curricula catch my eye!

This post is such an encouragement to stay the course. This is the reason why we homeschool, and I pray our family will see the same fruit as yours someday! :D

This is so true, Lynnh! How encouraging to see your ds developing a solid Christian worldview and Biblical discernment - what more could a parent want?!? That is worth celebrating. You described what is happening in our home as well. HOD really is helping teach my dc Biblical discernment too. I see the same type of "weighing" decisions in my ds Wyatt. It is encouraging to see him thinking carefully about his worldview and how it impacts what he does in his free time, what he listens to, what he watches, who his friends are, how he interacts with us as his parents as well as with his little brothers, how he acts at church, and so much more. I can trace these behaviors back to all of our time together in HOD. :D Thanks for sharing this - it is one of the most important reasons we love HOD in our home!

In Christ,
Julie

Lynn,

This is what homeschooling is all about, isn't it. I am so thankful for your post as this is what we seek with all our hearts as we write our guides. :D We seek to turn the hearts of our children toward our Lord and for them to view the world through the Biblical lens provided in His Word. I loved your examples of the things you see your son weighing in the day-to-day. Each of these examples show his heart for the Lord. :D What a joy to behold! :D

Thanks again for sharing!

Blessings,
Carrie
