Stories of the Pilgrims Question
Stories of the Pilgrims Question
Hi,
I am curious if we are meant to use the Comprehension Questions when they appear at the end of a reading in Stories of the Pilgrims?
Thanks!

Re: Stories of the Pilgrims Question
I use them - it helped dd think back on the details. When there are not questions, I have her narrate back the story to me.
I've done all the guides now with at least one child and still feeling the HOD LOVE. LOL!

Re: Stories of the Pilgrims Question
I don't know if we are supposed to. I started using them with DD1 and it made her hate that book. She would cry when she saw us getting it out. So since then I haven't used them.

Not sure that HOD intends for you to, but I always did and we enjoyed it.

Re: Stories of the Pilgrims Question
We use them. My kids need help remembering, even though the activities and "key idea" do help them remember parts of the stories too. If they don't know the answer I either give them a BIG clue or just tell them, my kids aren't always good with the retention or comprehension, but usually they can answer the questions.

Re: Stories of the Pilgrims Question
I use them, but it is very relaxed. I try not to make it seem like a quiz. My ds has already turned 9 this year though and I think it is good for him to be asked to recall with led questions. He does not always know the answer and sometimes I can tell he has zoned out during my reading. I don't fuss it a lot and just find the paragraph in the reading with the answer and reread that paragraph. Then I ask again the question and we talk a bit.
I think if I made it a right or wrong type of questioning that he would feel stress about it. I don't always do it either. It is more of a hit and miss thing. I tend to do it more if I think that his attention wavered during the reading.

Re: Stories of the Pilgrims Question
Thanks for your help and advice everyone! We will give them a try and see how it goes. I like the idea of just doing them casually together and referring back to the text as needed.
Thanks!
Thanks!

This is exactly what we did, and we enjoyed this approach together!Tidbits of Learning wrote:I use them, but it is very relaxed. Thanks Julie - I am glad to hear you successfully used the same approach too. That is what we have been doing each day and it is working very well!
