Update - LHFHG/Beyond with a 5.5yo

Post by Heidi in AK » Wed Jan 25, 2012 5:27 pm

We've been at HOD for about a year. We started in LHTH, and when DD's skills surpassed that which I could do through LHTH and the RH side of LHFHG, we just moved into LHFHG. About two months into it, DD's reading ability just skyrocketed. She's reading at a grade 3 level, and so we subbed the RH side of Beyond for the RH side of LHFHG, and kept her in Earlybird math. Julie, it was the spelling that was getting her, and she asked one day what happened to Peter Cottontail, since we were now in Beyond and reading about Helen Keller.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, we had about 2 weeks off from school. We just picked up LHFHG and are going to do it in its entirety except for the Phonics choices. We are going to sub in ER's there. We're also going to do half of a day in a day for now, because we just have really struggled finding our rhythm. The school is fine, it's just that we are so ingrained in our military community that I have in any given week at least two mornings that are taken up with meetings or other things, and when we get home, we're so tired or have something else we can't get to school. It's been really weird, and I take responsibility. That said, DD5.5 is progressing along. All our toys are educational or Christian (or both) in our house, so I have chosen to take the CM approach and recognize that she doesn't need to do formal schooling till she's 6.

She likes it, though, so we are just starting back. I have a chart I made that I can't attach here. It just tracks RH and LH separately by day and unit so we can keep ourselves on track and see how quickly we're progressing through LHFHG. My goal is to finish it by the end of this year. DH will be gone for work for significant parts of the year, so we will do school if he's not home, and not do school if he is. That's one reason we homeschool.

I think it's working well. DD5.5 also has a definite tolerance level, and if I run into it, she's done. Hence, for now, we're back to half-speed. It's been a jerky ride, but I love how HOD is set out so I don't have to wonder if I've missed something. :D

I'm glad you guys are getting back into the swing of it. For some reason when you had shared earlier I thought you were doing what you say you are doing now, just subbing in ER instead of phonics lessons. Some of the storytime books in Beyond are quite long, while my 5YO does listen to them, I think the comprehension level is pretty high. So she was struggling with the spelling too? You are so right, she doesn't need to be doing that stuff, especially that much of it, at such a young age. Just enjoy this time (I should do that too! Sometimes because my 2nd is so eager I want to push on ahead but then it always seems to lead to problems and I probably push her too hard).

Yes, Melissa, I was going to, but then got overzealous. It wasn't long before she just protested every time I brought up the RH side. So, here we go again.
