PHFHG History/Storytime reading

I was noticing on Julie's schedule that she has her son doing the Reading About History and the Storytime readings independently. If you are also using Preparing, are you reading to your child, having them read independently, reading to each other, or doing a mix?

I think you may find that you were looking at Julie's older son's list, he is doing RevtoRev. Her son in PHFHG is doing storytime and history reading with her, but his independent history reading on his own.

We are starting PHFHG shortly with my 8 and 10 year olds. My 10 year old is almost 11 so is doing the extensions. I am going to have her do her history reading on her own, but join myself and DD2 with regard to the discussion. She will also be doing her independent history and extension work on her own. She will join us for Storytime. I am doing this because at this stage we are planning to start her on RtR mid year as this is where she places but we just couldn't find the finances to do both right now.

With my 8 year old, I will be following the guide as it is written in terms of teacher directed, semi independent and independent. I do think that she will require a bit more teacher directed time in the first month or so as we have not used HOD before.

Thanks, Molly. You are right - I was looking at Wyatt's RevtoRev schedule. Not enough sleep last night. My dd is 10 and also is doing Preparing with extensions. Unless we hit a time crunch(we have 6 school age dc), I read the Read About History and the Storytime books to her. We enjoy that time together, helps keep me on top of where she is in her studies, and makes for some good discussion time. She reads the extensions on her own. When I *thought* Julie's son was taking on all the reading in PHFHG, I was just curious to know if others were changing things up as well.

Thanks for answering here, Molly! You are right, that was Wyatt's schedule. I'm glad you asked though, newsong! I have kept all of the "T" boxes in PHFHG, including the "Reading about History" and "Storytime" boxes. RIley is almost 9 yo, and I definitely want to hang onto those - plus we enjoy them together. However, if I had a 10 yo and was short on time, I would consider having my 10 yo read a portion of the "Reading about History". Charlotte Mason would agree this is fine. If things are going well already though, and your 10 yo is responsible for the extensions' readings, I think I'd just keep on going about things the same way and enjoy the year to the hilt! HTH!
