When to start Beyond etc...

Post by moedertje » Wed Jan 04, 2012 2:54 pm

My first grader is in unit 32 with LHFHG with 1st grade options and Beyond math and I am wondering if I wait with Beyond till 2nd grade (trying not to start Bigger till 3rd grade), whether it will be enough for him to do spelling list1 and the Beyond language arts? We belong to an umbrella school and have to do standardized testing.
Or should I start him now on the language arts and spelling list 1 and work thought the summer so I can start R&S 2 and spelling list 2 next school year when I plan on starting Beyond?
He has finished his handwiriting book and I do some copy work with him. He has no problem with that. :D He is doing great with math almost done with 1a, he is almost done with his thinking skills books and is at the doing very well with ER program. :D :D He enjoys school, but tends to get frustrated with any activity where he has to draw. He is my perfectionistic, perceiver, so even when I try to encourage him he sees that his drawing is not what it should be! We are not very artistic :(
Any ideas will be great to help me as I also prayerfully seek the Lord about this.

moedertje,

I'm thinking that if you are on Unit 32 of LHFHG, I would just head into Beyond after you finish LHFHG. If you wanted to stretch Beyond a bit, you could do it 4 days a week or do it half-speed for a bit, but I don't think I would put off starting it until your child's a second grader as that will be a wait. One guide prepares a child very well for the next guide in line. :D

No matter what you decide to do as far as Beyond goes, when you finish LHFHG, I would start with spelling list 1 in Beyond and also start the gentle grammar lessons in Beyond. I wouldn't worry about going through the summer to finish the spelling and grammar, but by starting soon with List 1 and the grammar in Beyond you'll be on the right track. After summer break, I'd just pick the spelling and grammar back up and start where you left off. Whenever you finish List 1, I'd move to List 2. This will probably be around this same time next year then for your little honey to begin List 2 and Rod and Staff English 2. That would work well prior to taking standardized tests at the end of grade 2.

Blessings,
Carrie

Carrie, thank you for taking out the time to personally respond. I think I like the idea of doing Beyond 4 times a week right after finishing LHFHG doing spelling and language art, than. :D

We enjoyed doing Beyond (and Bigger Hearts) 4 days a week too - sounds like a good plan! :D

Thank you for your encouragement also Julie! :D I told my ds that we will be done with LHFHG soon and he made a big sad face :( I am glad I have learned that stopping the guide taking summer break and starting again does not upset the flow of a guide! :D
Thank you ladies for your wisdom :D
