Bigger:

Unit 9: long a words formed with silent e as in grape.

Unit 15: words with er as in summer.

Unit 22: words with ea as in peach.

Unit 28: words with oo as in shook

Unit 34: reviews days of week.

that enough?

Beyond: the second word after "or" is a starred * word that may be more difficult. Also list 2 is more difficult than one, you can choose which list.

short a words
list 1-ask or man list 2-back or fast

short e words
list 1-get or them list 2 end or then

short i words
list 1-got or was list 2-sock or long

short u words
list 1-cut or from list 2-shut or some

short vowels ending in double consonants
list 1-well list 2 still

They get progressively harder as the units go on using words like these in unit order:
sir
start
pay
fail
keep
leap
any
slow
owl
fool
hoof
raw
boil

Thank you ladies. Very helpful. I'm trying to figure out where to start my son with the spelling list. He is going to be ten but still doesn't spell very well.

I called HOD to find out what words will be in Preparing, so hopefully I'll get a call back and go from there.

Again, thank you.

I believe you're going to have a choice between two levels of dictation in Preparing...for spelling. No actual spelling list. I'm sure Carrie will be along to answer this specifically.

Carrie,

If you see this thread and answer here, don't worry about calling me back :)

I have ordered the Guide Preparing and am wondering what I should do for my oldest son who does not spell very well. We are working on it though.

He can't spell things like decide, clock, puppy, jumped, summer, ride, strain etc. Josh is 10 and will be in the 5th grade this Fall.

If I need to order another guide for him in order to use the spelling list I'll do that. I'll use it in the future anyway

Appreciate any advice.

I'm thinking I may have called you back prior to getting on the board today? But, with the usernames on the board being different from the real names of people, I'm never sure!

There will be 3 levels of dictation in "Preparing...", instead of 2! We've added one more level to help those with kiddos who are using our extension package or for those who have children who are excellent spellers.

The first level of dictation passages in "Preparing..." will be exactly the same as the dictation passages provided in "Bigger...". The next 2 levels of passages will be progressively more difficult. :D

Hope that helps!

Blessings,
Carrie

Thank you Carrie, yes it was me who you called. Knowing some of the dictation passages has really helped.

I love how the Guide will have 3 levels. Again thanks for getting back to me.

Wow...I'm even more in awe! :D First learning HOD targets all learning styles, and now beefing up the guides even more. How awesome!

We're starting Bigger as soon as it gets here, intending to be done so we can start Preparing in the late fall.
