Another confirmation that HOD is perfect for ds

Post by LynnH » Wed Dec 07, 2011 12:09 pm

We met with the neuropsychologist yesterday to get results of my ds's testing. We didn't learn too much that we didn't already know. One thing we did find out is that he tested fine in reading comprehension. The issue we are seeing is pretty much what I had already figured out. He has a problem with his verbal and visual memory for new information. When this was tested by having him recall things he had just heard or seen (such as a string of numbers), he only remembered half of what a "typical" child would the first time, then on the second exposure he was closer to what a typical kid would remember after 2 exposures, and by the 3rd exposure he had caught up. He also said once it was in there it was there, he didn't forget it. So the problem isn't with reading comprehension it is more that he needs things presented multiple times in different ways. The Dr. even gave an example of having him do a map of the Roman invasion with arrows etc and then having him read about it. I had to laugh because this is exactly something we have done in CTC/RTR. He said he needs to have the big picture and framework and then the details all filled in. This is also something HOD does by the different books, with some books covering the time period and others covering the people and events in more detail The history project also gives him exposure in a different way as well as the storytime. I once again am just in awe of a God who knows what we need way before we know what we need. I am so thankful for HOD.

How awesome to hear this. It gives me such hope for my son. Although he is only 6, I do feel with his verbal issues now, and the way we need to work with him to get his speech and grammar correct, will mean that HOD will be the perfect fit for him. We are unable to afford to get a program for DS just now, but mid next year we should be able to get him one. I look forward to him making hte connections.

But that is just terrific about your son. I am so pleased you have found something that works just right for him.

Lynnh - I am so glad you have received the results of your ds's testing, and your thoughts were right on track. I am so glad that God led you to HOD too, for your ds, and also for ME, because I really enjoy having you on this board and having the privilege of meeting both of you in person. :D

My ds is dyslexic and has similar issues. We are only in Beyond, but I'm finding out the same thing. HOD is just perfect for us. It actually gets better for us everyday. Thank God for HOD and Thank God that he led us here. :D .
