Back to Rod and Staff :)

My daughter Keri requested a switch at the beginning of this school year from Rod and Staff 6 to CLP. Well CLP started off all right, but after the first unit it became apparent that the book moves way too fast without enough explanation of concepts Anyway, I gave her the option of dropping down an level in CLP or going back to Rod and Staff 6 and she picked Rod and Staff I think she realized that what she didn't like about Rod and Staff before, the long explanations, is the thing that makes it so good-we had a lesson today and she seemed so happy she could understand it well Plus, since we are doing the second half of the book, she was even happier to know grammar would be cut to two days a week More proof that HOD's choices are really great if you give them a chance-everything is so well-thought out and planned. I wish we could go back to Singapore math, but I don't want to push it there-math is going fine right now
As for Tamara, she has had a leap of maturity and is finishing her work very quickly and well, so I added Extensions for her beginnig with Hittite Warrior-it adds just the right amount to each day for her, and she loves extra reading

Welcome back I have found in our own Rod and Staff journey that it took 2 years for the information to take root in my children's minds and in their 3rd year it is blossoming and very effective. Good things take time. I'll confess many times during those first 2 years I found myself wondering if it was worth it!

I will also note, that this week I was a visiting with a high school literature teacher and she wanted to know what I did with my children for grammar. She assumed that I "like all homeschoolers" used Daily Grams, or something like that. When I told her we used Rod and Staff she was REALLY IMPRESSED. She went on to say that she had had Rod and Staff when she was in elementary school and learned all she needed to know! I lamented that my 14 yo was only on the beginning of Book 6 and she didn't hesitate to say to not be deterred that he was already getting much more than the majority of other students at the high school level.

So, welcome back to you and your daughter I pray it will continue to go well.

We've also recently come back to Rod & Staff after trying a couple of other programs. After trying the other programs, I'm more impressed than ever with Rod & Staff!

This year we switched to BJU Press for English/Grammar, and honestly, my sons do like it better, BUT, I personally am missing the Rod and Staff for the simplicity of use it is on the teacher! My sons just really like the color pages and the pictures/layout better, plus they do all their work on a worktext page. Oh well, who knows, we may go back to Rod and Staff one day. It's less expensive too! Another perk....

I'm glad Keri made the decision to come back to R & S English, Lourdes. Sometimes you don't know what you've got 'til it's gone, right? Sounds like your dd has come around to that kind of thinking like so many of us do with decisions we've made. I've used a good many grammar programs throughout my teaching years, but R & S English is my permanent grammar home now. It's not flashy, but it's academically unparalleled, IMHO. I hope your dd continues to do well with her return to R & S English!

Finding an English program can really be a journey, can't it! I tried so many things with my oldest son in this area until finally settling in with Rod and Staff. I agree it takes time to really see the progress, but it is such solid instruction that the lightbulbs truly do go off in the students' heads as they progress through it. Using Rod and Staff even gave me a better understanding of why we learn to diagram, and I had thought there was no point to it anymore.
