english/spelling first grade ques.

Post by renee » Mon Nov 21, 2011 5:14 pm

I have a question about using Little Hearts for first grade. He is coming out of private school (abeka curriculum). Is it recommended not to start grammar until third grade? I noticed Beyond uses 1x a week intro to grammar which we would do in second grade, correct? Then in third we use Rod and Staff 2. Do I have that right ?

So then we would not be doing the spelling until second grade? I am kind of confused because the spelling in Beyond offers list 1 and 2. I was thinking 1 would be first grade.

So HOD does not do grammar (textbook) until third grade and spelling starts in first grade. It doesn't sound right. I need help!

Blessings,

Renee

You have options. I mentioned this in the last post. (when I was answering your math question ... I got off on a tangent!)

With my 1st son: 2nd grade - Beyond - light grammar lessons. Bigger 3rd grade - went straight into English R & S 3. It could not have gone better - very smooth transition!

With my 2nd son: (he's a little more advanced) 2nd Grade Beyond - (I skip the light grammar lessons, because I did them with him last year when I took him through Little Hearts) I use Rod & Staff English 2 with him. (1 lesson per day 4 days per week) Next year for Bigger, we will do English 3.

I feel confident that I could skip English 2 with my 2nd son and go straight into English 3 next year, but he happens to really enjoy it and I don't want to stop doing it since he loves it so much. You can tailor it to fit your child. If you think he can do the light grammar lessons along with Little Hearts, you can order the Beyond guide and teach him those lessons this year, and do English 2 next year with Beyond. Or, you can do Beyond exactly as written for 2nd grade, and start him in either English 2 or 3 the following year for 3rd grade.

I used the spelling list 1 in Beyond along with Little Hearts. This year I am using Spelling List 2 in Beyond. Next year we begin dictation.

I hope all of that makes sense. You are so smart to ask these questions. When I started, I had just as many questions!

A lot of people use Beyond for 1st grade and Bigger for 2nd grade ... so the guide gives options for spelling to use for either a 1st grader or 2nd grader.

I prefer using Beyond for 2nd and Bigger for 3rd. (I especially cannot imagine how I would do Preparing with a 3rd grader as written - it does require a lot of writing, and while my 4th grader is handling it very well - I know that he would not have handled it well last year as a 3rd grader.

Just wanted to pop in and mention that HOD uses age/grade ranges so that you can plaqce your child based on skill, not an arbitrary grade level. As a homeschooling mom, you can call your child whatever grade level he is chronologically, but as for placement in HOD, check where your child fits best in the placement chart below:

Little Hearts can work well for most 5 to 7 year olds, and Beyond has a range of ages 6 to 8. It really comes down to what you see your child is ready for. Hope that helps!

Renee,

Just to clarify, for a first grader doing Beyond we would recommend spelling list 1 and doing the gentle grammar lessons once each week as planned in Beyond. Then, as your second grader headed into Bigger Hearts he would do spelling list 2 and Rod and Staff English 2. The following year as your child headed into Preparing Hearts, he would move to studied dictation and English 3. :D

This is just one possible path, but I share it based on your thoughts that your first grader would be heading into Beyond as a first grader. Each guide offers two or more levels of spelling/dictation and a grammar option. :D

Blessings,
Carrie
