Heart of Dakota Curriculum Questions
Heart of Dakota Curriculum Questions
First I would like to say I think your material looks great, exactly what I am looking for. I am new to homeschooling, my son is 10 in the 5th grade. I just pulled him out of our public school with major bullying problems that we have been dealing with for the past 2 years even the school refused to deal with, and my son was just being traumatized everyday going to school. There was no learning, even the teacher was bullying him.
I and have a mish mash of some very good used bible based curriculum that we are getting by with for right now until I can find what I want to purchase for him use. I am financially restricted but do want my child to have a good education. I have prayed a lot and know that this is the best decision for my child, now it is just finding the right curriculum, holly smokes there is a lot out there. I have been lead back to this curriculum time and time again and just feel it calling to me with a pull like none of the others.
We are Christians from a Southern Baptist church and the biblical portion of what I will be exposing him to is very important to me. I want to make sure I know what he is learning where it is coming from. Can you tell me what bible the scriptures are taken from? And is the whole program based on one certain religion or is it just Christ based (as it does seem). I hope this has all come out clear and not not offensive in any way, I take medication that makes me sometimes not very clear. I apologize for anything worded wrongly, I hope everyone understand what I am trying to ask. I hope that this is the program that I end up going with I do feel it is the one the Lord is leading me towards.
Thank you I look forward to hearing back from you.

Re: Heart of Dakota Curriculum Questions
You can use any version of the Bible you prefer. We have used ESV, NIV, and KJV.
HOD is a Christ-centered program; there are families of different denominations using it happily. We happen to be Southern Baptist here, and we are very happy with HOD.

We are non-denominational, conservative, Bible believers, committed to the Word of God here and happy so far.
"And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him."

Thank you for your replies, as I feared, what I was trying to ask did not come out clearly, I will try again. I was just wondering what bible the scriptures are taken from that are in the HOD material. Thank you.

All of the guides we have used just list a verse reference and then you can use any version you want.

Re: Heart of Dakota Curriculum Questions
Like the pp's said, you can use any version you like.
For example, in Bigger this week, the instructions were, "Find Proverbs 15:16-17 in your Bible. This is the memory selection for this unit. Read the verses aloud."
The Quiet Time box in RTR says "Recite Philippians 1:9." He uses his own Bible. I would like to note, though, that the Bible Study used in RTR, Hidden Treasures in Philippians, uses the New American Standard. I *think you could get around that and use your own version, but as we aren't doing that study, I'm not completely sure.

Re: Heart of Dakota Curriculum Questions
Agreeing with the pps that all of the scripture can be referenced with whichever version you prefer. Sometimes a particular music CD or other book that is used will use a particular version. The music that goes with LHFHG and BLHFHG, the Hide 'Em In Your Heart CDs uses NASB,NIV and NKJV and the Lead Me to the Rock CD used in Preparing uses the KJV. You'll find that the program is Christ centered and non-denominational in approach.

Agreeing with the PP's. The curriculum is written to be used with whatever version of the Bible you feel comfortable. It is Christian through and through, though not denominational at all. I love that about it.

Re: Heart of Dakota Curriculum Questions
The Philippians 1 and Philippians 2 CDs scheduled for RTR and CTC are NIV. I love the CDs but my boys do AWANA at our church and memorize in NKJV so it confuses them to listen to them. If you have a concern with the version used in any of the CDs you can leave them off with no problems since they are just "tools" to help memorize.

Re: Heart of Dakota Curriculum Questions
Welcome to the HOD Board, Juliette! Your post tugged at my heart, as it makes me so very sad to hear of dc being bullied in school. There is just no escape from that, and if the teacher is not helping, it is truly heartbreaking. I am so happy you have made the decision to homeschool James, and I think it will take some time, but you will begin to see him just blossom into a wonderful, confident young boy! HOD has been such a blessing to our 3 sons, and it is very Christ-centered. As the other posters have said, you choose the Bible you want to use, and the verses are referenced. The music CD's are varying versions of the Bible, but they are optional. We look at the music CD's as praise music that gets us joyfully singing along and praising the Lord. I cannot tell you how thankful I am for the Christ-centered focus of HOD. I am very excited for you and James to go through "Boyhood and Beyond" in RTR at some point together. It addresses so much about becoming a strong Christian young man, and it helped my ds make sense of this world and his response to difficult situations. Anyway, I'm so glad you're going to get to use HOD - may it bless you and your ds as it has blessed me and my sons!
Oh, and proper placement is such a help, so be sure to check out the placement chart and ask questions if you need help choosing - we love to help here - this is a very encouraging board!
