Reading Lesson question

Post by sweetsharleen » Thu Nov 10, 2011 4:50 pm

We are doing LHFHG and, along with it, The Reading Lesson. We are currently at the end of lesson 5. The last page says to go over it until your child can read all the words. My daughter has to sounds them out, but can read all of them. Should I wait until she can read them from sight or is it ok to move ahead? And if we should wait, are there any suggestions to reinforcing them?

Thanks,

Sharleen

We just kept moving right along, 2 pages a day. Some days were slower, some she caught right on. I'd just keep chugging away at it and your daughter will grow into it. :D We're on Unit 18 and my dd5 is reading so smoothly now, whereas in the beginning I wondered if it would be enough. HTH!

We also kept moving along. I think that was about the point in the book that I realized that we were supposed to be making flash cards for those review pages. I did that for a few of the lessons and would periodically pull them out for a review (it worked best if we could make a game out of it). I'll have to say that I think making my son review that page at the end of each lesson until they were easy sight words for him would have been counter-productive and very discouraging to him! He hated those pages.

Same here we kept moving a long. :D They sort of learn at different times at different rates. If they needed to we could always go back and review a page. Learning to read is just the weirdest things. My kids would seem stuck then make huge jumps or I would think they were not getting it and soon I would find they were way past it. One thing I did do was use the CD for reinforcement. I know a lot don't use that but I found it very valuable. We are not much on video games so the CD was a super big deal. I could make them do just about anything to get to that CD.

Thanks for the encouragement! We've been playing memory with the words and it seems to have helped, but still just sounding most of them out. I let her play the cd about every other day. However, after the first week, she's done with that lesson. We'll move on! It was a blessing Monday on our way home it finally clicked that reading wasn't just for school time. She was sounding out all the signs she could see. The smile on her face when she understood what she was reading was priceless! I'm so grateful that I am able to be a part of her learning experiences.

I just remembered one other thing. We don't have a CD or flash cards for the book, so the only review I did was write "secret messages" on the white board when my daughter wasn't looking, at a level she could read. The sentences would include a couple of key words or letter sounds. She loved finding secret messages or little silly sentences each day and it was a fun way for her to practice without seeming like it was practice. :D I haven't been doing it as much since her reading is coming along, but she still gets a message a week to discover.
