Help! Not liking Rod & Staff English!

Post by HappyMama » Sat Oct 08, 2011 1:34 pm

We are using Bigger for my 8 y.o. ds this year and it is awesome, we really love it! The only problem I am having is with the Rod & Staff English 2 book. I feel like my ds is not challenged *at all* with this book and it seems like it's too easy for him. He keeps asking me why the lessons keep repeating the same things over and over again when he already understands it. He's a pretty good sport about it, but I agree with him, I think it's too repetitive with the concepts for him. Maybe I should have gotten him book 3, but it doesn't seem wise to skip book 2. What can I do? Could I skip some lessons and go right to the reviews? Thoughts??

Thanks!

If your ds is 3rd grade, then you might want to try R&S English 3. It is quite a step up from English 2.

Yes, I was thinking of maybe trying R&S English 3, but I just don't want to make sure that we we wouldn't be skipping over some concepts by doing that.

If I am sure that my children have a good handle on the lessons and concepts then I move ahead a little more quickly. There is a lot of repetition and sometimes that is very helpful. But if he is learning the material then it shouldn't be a problem to skip over a few lessons. I do periodically have a review of past chapters just to see if they've retained what they've already learned. They usually do.

My daughter wasn't quite ready for R&S 3 but is flying through R&S2. We are doing it orally. She had been using a less formal grammar program and really just didn't know the grammar terms but uses good grammar in her speech. We are doing 2 to 4 lessons a day orally and will move on to R&S3 when she finishes the book.

I would suggest trying R&S3, if he's not ready for it you could back up a bit and review 2.

Look through the whole book 2 and see if there is anything he doesn't yet understand or know. If he knows it all, by all means go up to 3. If he needs some practice on certain parts, just do those and then move on to 3.

We started out in R&S 2 for my 8 year old this year. He, too, was pretty bored by it. So we just moved him up to R&S 3 which we were already using for his older sister. They both are being challenged by it, so no complaints that it is too easy anymore. I really like the R&S, but I love grammar, anyways. The kids, not their favorite subject, but they are doing well. :)
