Resurrection to Reformation Unit 4

We enjoyed the Race to Rome game that was the history project for unit 4. I'll try to come back and post a pic of the kids playing it...Here are some pics that I have right now:

Preparing Hearts for His Glory Unit 4

My daughter started Child's History of the World this week and she really seems to like it. I also enjoy hearing her sing to the Psalms CD and it enables her to memorize the verses more easily. I was very impressed with her illustrations for her notebooking in Science this week. Here are a couple pictures:

I'm looking forward to seeing how everyone else's week went! :D

I have a 2yr and almost 4 doing LHTH this year. This was our third week and I could not be happier. We all look forward to sharing together after breakfast. We review a memory verse, read, do the fingerplay (a surprise favorite) and listen to the songs. After lunch we do an activity maybe more while littlest naps.

I love it's gentle approach. My husband was so skeptical about purchasing a curriculum but now he is pleased. It is helping us be intentional about teaching them about God and instilling our values. We are seeing the benefits as they interact within our family.

This week we focused on giving preference to others and Gods promises being truth. Looking forward to seeing what next week holds.

This was a good homeschool week for us with HOD! We finished up Unit 6 of Beyond, some reading with my DD4, and of course the usual general fun and learning with my DD2. DD6 and DD4 are still really enjoying the readings from Stories of the Pilgrims. They have identified with the children in the stories, and we have learned a lot about the culture of Holland at that time, as well as the importance of following what God wants us to do rather than what anyone else, including a king, would tell us to do. We have greatly enjoyed the extra activities that relate to the stories we've read. When reading about the Storks in Holland we did the "webbed feet" activity, showing why webbed feet can help a duck move through the water better than non-webbed feet would. This week it was the canals activity, modeling the canals. The girls enjoyed that one too.

Here are pictures our craft (first you see my 2YO, then 4YO, then 6YO). We read Psalm 51:1-7 and talked about how David asked God to take away his sinful heart and wash his heart clean. There have been applications for that time and interestingly I think this was the first time my DD4 has realised or admitted to having sin in her heart (just last week we had a discussion about how she thought she could be good enough on her own to make it to heaven). My DD6 is trying to preach the Gospel to her sister! It's great for me to see how well DD6 understands it, and I appreciate her enthusiasm but we try really hard in our family to not let any of the children feel they are the authority over the other, so I am really sensitive to one child telling the other what to do. I have tried to find a balance of letting DD6 express what she knows about the Lord without being preachy to her sister!

Back to the topic - the craft: my girly-girls can't really stand to make a craft that's not more adorned, so we decorated our hearts as well as putting the strip in with the clean white heart and the black heart with sin. What a fun time we had!

Part 2 of our week in review. Tuesday I decided to pack a lunch and go for a quick nature walk. There's a very short trail close to our house that goes over a creek and is very wooded, so I thought that would be a fun place to start. What I did not do was check the weather before I went, and ultimately I'm glad I didn't because it was 95 degrees outside and I'm sure I would have decided not to go if I had seen that. By the time we were done we were very sweaty and tired, but we drank plenty of water, and the girls couldn't stop talking about how much fun they had! My DD6 took a notebook and crayons and pencils and drew pictures of the butterfly, squirrel, and fish we saw along the way. We collected leaves and did leaf rubbings for the first time too (I had to steer them away from the poison oak of course). Overall even though we all had to bathe after we came home, I was glad we went. Here are a couple of pictures from our nature walk.

I hope it encourages someone else to do this, so simple, and it made such an impact! Thanks for another great week HOD!

Oh I had shared last week that my DD4 was having some problems with reading. Well, I have cut her lessons in half, and am working to make everything very positive for her and this week was a great week. I am also trying not to help her as much when she struggles, but to just patiently say "no try it again" and see how she does. She has done great! I am so thankful to the Lord for working in her heart and mine!

Looking forward to hearing about others' weeks.

I'm playing catch-up (and trying to upload photos for the first time). We are doing a 5-day week with RTR so my "weeks" are going to be a little off. We are thoroughly enjoying RTR and will complete Unit 4 on Monday. We have loved the storytime selections and have had good conversations with Boyhood & Beyond. My son is taking solid ownership of his Bible Quiet Time! Here are some photos from our first 4 units...I hope...

His Roman Arch (he laughed at himself for drawing a "NYC-style" skyline in the background!)...
Image

His "stained-glass" window project (before the frame was put on)...
Image

Image

Comparing the sizes of the planets...he chose to cut out models rather than using the balloons and had to get creative to find paper big enough for Jupiter and Saturn...
Image

A Shakespeare page (he is enjoying Shakespeare more than I thought he would) AND notebook pages (I think this is one where he wrote info in the wrong boxes on the right-hand page--we are still getting back into the swing of following the directions exactly)...
Image
Image

His second Medieval Writing Lesson paragraph...
Image

A science lab page (love the conclusion that "my guess was correct" :) We'll be working on more detailed conclusions), and yes, Daddy joined in on the rock-dropping action!...
Image

And his pieces for the Race to Rome game which was great fun! We have issues with "sticky" here (probably due to high humidity) so we had to use some flour to keep the pieces from sticking to the glass as he flattened them. I played Race to Rome with him and then his older sister played. I think the names & locations of the Barbarians are more firmly planted in all of our minds now!...

Oh, tollhousemom, I really enjoyed your review. I liked your son's NYC skyline :D . He really did an outstanding job on his cross picture. The picture he did with him and his dad for Science is just too cute! :) His game pieces turned out a lot better than ours did. I'm not sure what happened but ours don't really resemble small round disks.

Hello All!

We had a great week with both Bigger and RTR!

I am short on time, so I will post some pictures and give a few details. I love being able to share here as much for myself (as memories of our year) as for others to get a glimpse into the days with HOD. :)

BEYOND:

ds is doing great in his cursive using Cheerful Cursive. We have stopped and started several times through the years with trying to learn cursive (he has been interested and wanted to learn because his big brother writes in cursive), but each time, he just wasn't ready. Now, he is definitely ready! I think it looks great!

Image

We enjoyed Science this week with a cool experiment on germs! It was very enlightening for my ds. He made a comment about seeing the dots and washing them off and we talked about how you couldn't see real germs, so that is why it is so important to wash well!

Germy Hands Image Can't wipe them off with a paper towel: Image Even a bowl of cold water doesn't get them all! Image Washing our hands in warm, soapy water is the only way to get them completely clean!
And here is his lab sheet! Image

We learned about wants and needs in History. I had to chuckle at some of the things he considered "needs." Haha...but he had a point, so I let him go with it. :) Very fun and cute activity!

Image

We have started back into adding with carrying again and ds got it right off the bat! I love when things click like that for them!

Image

We also finished Hank the Cow Dog in our DITHR this week. Our project was to make a tube character and act out some of the book. Ds was VERY proud of his Hank(ie). It turned out really good and was something we both enjoyed working on. :)

Resurrection to Reformation

RTR is quite the challenge for my ds12! The work does challenge him to think, and his days demand that he stay organized and follow directions. More than once as we have gotten back to school this year, I have caught him skipping directions in the guide. As I type this, he is working on his writing. He wrote lovely paragraphs - just as he was supposed to do. However, he didn't pay one iota of attention to the MLA style he was supposed to use, nor the grading sheet that was supposed to guide his work with regard to use of certain words and making sure to not use other words. So...he is doing it over again. On a non-school day. He is not happy.

Here is some of the work he did manage to do correctly this week! LOL

This was a neat history project. He made a grid of a monastary. He got really creative with it and started making all sorts of crazy things with his art. He had a regular pig, a frankenstein pig, a redneck pig, a bomb tree. For "Make a workshop" - he made Lowes (since they have workshops for the kids). He is an interesting kid! He is always witty and humorous in his work. I am not sure if that is really a good thing, but I hate to stiffle his creativity. Maybe he will be a comic book writer one day. ??

Image

He is really loving Science and learning about Astronomy. It is his favorite part of the day. The other night, we were coming home from church and he was telling me what phase the moon was in. :) I wondered how he knew and then realized maybe this played a role:

Image

And...of course, there is his Edible Earth. I already posted about how much he LOVED that one. We all enjoyed it quite a bit. It came at just the right time too because that had been a really rough school day for us.

Image

The core (that was too big for just one chip!)

Ladies, thank you for sharing your journeys with HOD, I enjoyed reading through it all. :D

gotpeace91, your daughter did great on her drawings and I love how colorful she made it. We are a few units behind you, so I see what we have to look forward to. :P :P
Seems like your son is able to relax and enjoy his readings for school.

2boysmom, so glad that your dh is pleased with LHTH and how it teaches your kiddo's the word of God. Hope you enjoy your journey with HOD as we are in my family. We are on unit 5 in LHTH with my dd4. :D

MelinKansas, Since I speak Dutch and lived in Holland, this part of Beyond was a big favorite with me. :P :P I love your girls creativity, their hearts came out beautiful. :D The best part is that they are understanding how sin makes our heart dirty.

Mandy, Congratulations, may the Lord bless you and the baby. :D :D Your daughter looks like she is enjoying school very much, great to have all her stations set up to teach her independence.

Misty, All my kids enjoyed making the Egyptian collar last year with my ds who is doing LHFHG, your girls collars came out very nice. Alyson did a great job coloring in her "thinking skills" book.

tollhousemom, looks like your son has a good sense of humor. I love seeing all your pictures and getting a better idea of what RTR is going to be like. The best part is that he is taking solid ownership of his Bible Quiet Time, what a blessing! PTL :D :D

Rebecca, we enjoyed this germ science experiment, my son is now a stickler about handwashing  he's my one kid that likes to get down and dirty   the tube dog came out so cute, what a good job. :D Looking ahead at RTR and seeing how intricate their work is. Good for your son that he loves astronomy, and is able to put it into practice.

LynnH, I absolutely love your ds his stained glass art. He did a great job and what I like best is that his cross stands out really well. He is doing such a good job and I'm happy for you and him that he is enjoying school!
