So much for the extension reading schedule

We have done only 2 days of Rev2Rev. The extension reading is Calico Captive. Tonight I got back from a late walk and saw my son's light was on. I went in and he quickly threw a book under his chair with a sheepish look. He then grinned and showed me what he was "hiding" -- it was Calico Captive!!! He then said, "I'm sorry Mom, I just can't help myself! I thought I would just get a head start on tomorrow's reading but I think I am way past that now..." I told him he had half an hour left to read and then lights off. He gave me the biggest smile and dove back into the story. That is a battle I am not willing to fight. A kid who wants to spend his free time reading "contraband" HOD books? I'll take it! We are doing Rev2Rev for 8th grade so it isn't that he HAS to do the extension activities for hs credit so I am letting this one slide. I had to try very hard to not laugh as I left the room. I have to think there aren't many moms of 13yo boys facing THAT as the big discipline problem in the house. LOL. I love HOD.

Oh, I can't tell you how your post warms my heart! This is our 1st year w/ HOD using Beyond and Preparing and it's so good to know that we have so much more to look forward to in the years to come! Your "contraband" statement made me giggle --that is too funny. What a blessing of a discipline problem you have on your hands I love HOD too!

I hade the same "problem" last week. My son was reading "The Sword in the Tree" for DITHOR. I caught him during playtime reading it, almost exact same scenerio as you. It was the first day of the book, so I let him finish it. (he only had about 20 more pages to go) I gave him a different book for DITHOR. I agree there are other battles I would rather take up...Great problems to have...Thanks again Carrie for picking great books!!!!

We are JUST starting the program this year and we had Box Day last week. I let them look through the books as long as they wanted but told my ds6 that he wasn't allowed to READ anything because we are saving his books for class time. My dd5 is still in phonics instruction so I didn't have to worry about her.

If I DO find him sneaking one of his books and reading on his own once we start the program I will most likely be a softie about it too!

I am so excited about starting the program and my children are too! Thanks for sharing your boys' love of reading!!

My husband and I had originally planned to used history and science textbooks for this year, but after seeing them we shipped them ALL back. When the HOD books came, my son was begging to read some of the books. (I let him, since he's happy to read them again when they are assigned.) It was priceless, though, when my husband and I looked at each other and almost simultaneously said something like, "Hmmm... I don't think this would have happened if we had stuck with the textbooks!"

LOL I'm having this same "problem" with my oldest! When I was a kid, I would lose myself in books. I stayed up late reading them by nightlight and then I had to get up early to go to school the next day. I wish I was homeschooled! If my daughter is up reading a book, I just let her read. Books are such a joy, and we learn so much by reading on our own! It's all school, right?
