Conversations with my 10 y/o DD 1st day of Preparing

After reading Grandpa's Box, ch. 1:

Me:"Tell me what you learned about grandpa from this story."
DD:"I learned that he has A LOT of good stories that he can tell, but I have to wait for them because my mean mom won't read me any more chapters."
Me: "How does Grandpa use the yellow box?"
DD:"To tell stories that I won't get to hear today because my mean mom won't read me any more chapters."

And so on, through the rest of the questions. <giggle>

After getting her extensions reading assignment:
"Will you PLEASE read this to me? I can never remember science and history stuff when I have to read it. It's SO boring!"

After reading her extensions reading assignment and reading it independently:
"I CAN'T WAIT until tomorrow to find out what happens next. Oh, Mommy, why couldn't we have used a book like this all along? I remember EVERYTHING!"

At the end of the day, I asked how she liked it (it's 180 degrees from what we were doing last year).

"Well, it's still SCHOOL, but I have to say it was the MOST FUN SCHOOL DAY I EVER HAD! I learned about caves and the ice age and wooly mammoths and how the flood caused everything and how I'M NOT EVEN CLOSE to preparing myself as a Christian to go out and do good in the world because I don't take up the Sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God and look at it often enough and I learned that there is a place called the tundra and it's at the top of the world and...

...I learned that my mom won't read me an extra chapter of Grandpa's Box, even when I bat my eyes and beg."

(Run on sentence hers, not mine. I love that she loved it. And remembered so much! But my heart is all melty at how CONVICTED she was, on day ONE, that she had a responsibility to read God's Word, and hadn't been doing it "often enough".)

Can your dd come to our house and play??? She sounds like such a fun little girl I'm picturing this spunky, sweet gal with a great sense of humor.
And I'd love to see those batting little eyes!!

This was similar to my dd's reaction when we first started HOD (also 10 yrs in Preparing). Although I think your dd is a bit more detailed in sharing her thoughts! I bet oral narrations with her are just a hoot!

I loved reading this! Your dd has such a vivacious personality, and her love for life really shows here. I'm glad you stuck to your guns and didn't read on in "Grandpa's Box". That book read the way HOD schedules it just builds, and builds, and builds. I cried when we were done with it. I was thankful for every single day we got to read it. Your dd will have many wonder-filled days of learning ahead in PHFHG - I'm so glad she gets to do it!

My DD is "a bit more detailed" in sharing EVERYTHING that crosses her mind. I was a little worried about oral narrations, to be frank. I was thinking it might take another whole school day worth of time just to let her finish rattling on about what she learned (I love, love, love her, but haven't had an uninterrupted thought since the year 2000 ).

Then, as I read the instructions for WRITTEN narrations, I realized that I can USE the oral retellings to hone the skill of summary, of organizing what you want to say before you start just saying everything that pops into your head, of conveying your thoughts logically and precisely. What an important skill to learn!ANOTHER reason I'm SO glad I found HOD!
