How do I pick which SPELLING list to use?

Post by Heart_Mom » Tue Aug 09, 2011 12:26 pm

I'm doing Bigger with my 7 & 10 year olds this year, and I'm not sure which spelling list to use with my 7 year old. We used a different spelling program last year when we did Beyond, but I want to try HOD's spelling for her this year. So ... I'm not sure which list to use. I think she could do the easier list in Bigger, but we haven't officially "covered" all the words in the easiest list in Beyond. So, should I place her in the easier Beyond list, since we haven't officially covered all those words. Or should I just jump into the hardest list that I think she can handle? She does tend to have fairly good natural spelling, and remembers how to spell words fairly easily.

Thoughts? :D

Thanks so much! :D
Blessings,
Elisabeth

List 1 in beyond would be the "easiest" list

List 2 in beyond and the spelling list in Bigger are the same list as far as I can tell :-)

List 1 is for first grader level
and List 2 is for second grade.

I'd say If your previous spelling program was a first grade level then using List 2/Beyond List would be just fine.
If at any point you feel it is to hard you can always drop her down... But I have found even with my reluctant speller that the 3x5 cards way of learning the words is fantastic. (we only had tears once last year in bigger).

Tansy is right - List 2 in Beyond is the same as the Spelling List in Bigger Hearts. :D You could do either Spelling List 1 in Beyond, or Spelling List 2. :D Maybe the question is whether you think dd will be able to do Dictation Level 2 in a year? If that is looking like a "no way", I'd do List 1. :D

Thanks, Julie and Tansy!

I thought that there were three spelling lists total between Beyond and Bigger, and that one overlapped. I now realized that the spelling list in Bigger is the same as the more challenging one in Beyond.

I think that my 7 year old would be able to handle dictation the following year, so I guess that means that List 2 is the way to go. And like you said, Tansy, I can always drop back to list 1 if we need to.

Thanks!
Blessings,
Elisabeth
