Question about Bigger/son's placement

Post by momofone » Sun Aug 07, 2011 3:30 pm

After looking at the placement chart, I'm confused, again  My son could fit between Bigger/Preparing, but now I'm leaning more toward Bigger than before. We tried to do this guide a couple years back, but I got cold feet and didn't follow through. Long story, I'm sure Julie/Carrie remember.

My ds is past phonics, needs some spelling work with rules (Friday, he spelled "running" - "runing) so need that. He hasn't completely mastered cursive. Handwriting has been a little difficult. He still wants to print everything with large letters. However, he has worked well with Cheeful Cursive and is still working through that book. He can write a paragraph with encouragement  . He is behind in math, but making progress. He'd rather be doing anything besides school.  However, I manage to get most subjects done daily, with textbooks. O.k. sorry this is so long! DS is really only lacking in the handwriting area. However, not sure if he'd be ready for extensive writing/narrations that might be in Preparing???

My question is, if we use Bigger, would we need to use the extension package? I do already have some of the books in that package. Not sure??? Just looking for advice/placement help once again! :D Thanks for your kind words and help! You all are great on this board! :D

Hi, I found one of your posts that said ds is 10 and was "3rd grade" last year. Is that right? If so I would probably lean toward Bigger with Extensions. My daughter will be 9 in Oct and will be 4th grade, she will do Bigger with Extensions. Will he be able to do the extension reading on his own?

Yes, Lee Ann, he was 9 and I considered him 3rd grade last year because he used mainly 3rd grade materials. I think he could read the extensions on his own. I'm still contemplating this for ds. DH doesn't mind as long as we stop switching curriculum and get settled with something. I appreciate the help! :D

my daughter will be 10 in october and is only going into the 4th grade. we're in FL and the cut-off date is sept 1st, so she is right where she needs to be and same as any public school student. i'm using bigger with her and the extension packet. it is definitely beefy enough, but i'll keep her at grade level for math, dictation, and english (CLE math, dictation plus for spelling, & BJU english). hth

I think I'd do Bigger Hearts with extensions (unless the extensions will be too much), as it will have ds growing into the writing portions nicely. It will also have you partnering with him more as a teacher, so you can give him the roots of foundational skills so he'll have the wings for them in PHFHG on up. I think that the lesser amount of writing will help the learning be the fun and the focus, and then by the time he gets to PHFHG, he'll be ready for it. :) HTH!

I finally ordered!
I've prayed and I'm finally at peace over my decision. I just ordered Bigger/DITHOR and can't wait to get it in the mail! :D
After several years trying out other curriculum, I couldn't get HOD off my mind! Sounds like a love story, huh?

Now, off to see what I need to get to set up. Thanks everyone! :D
