Question about Cursive?

Post by tnahid » Sat Jul 30, 2011 5:21 pm

My son finished his cursive handwriting book last year and didn't want to do another one this year. He did very well. I was wondering how much I should make him use cursive writing this year in his lessons? He is 10 and on about 4th/5th grade level. He doesn't like to write too much, so I don't want to make it worse by forcing him to do too much cursive, but what is a good amount? Thanks!!

I'm thinking back to Preparing, and I think that 1 or 2 of the written things were to be done in cursive daily. The other copywork was not specified and was "writer's choice". You'll be using Bigger, right? (If you're headed into Preparing, just do what the guide says.) I think that I would just choose 1 or 2 things every day to be written in cursive. So...maybe the verse at the top of a notebooking page, the Bible verse copywork, the poetry copywork. Hey - idea as I type - I think I'd have him do the poetry copywork + one other thing (most days) cursive. My son chose to print the "writer's choice" things. He always printed for dictation and English, and I think that's fine. This year we're headed into RtR, and the intro to the guide says that the child is free to choose their preferred method for handwriting. At this point, he had instruction in cursive and has used it for 2 more years neatly in his written work, and if he prefers to print that's fine. (I'm guessing he will. )
