LHFHG OR Beyond for 1st gr

Post by christina101902 » Thu Jul 14, 2011 2:08 pm

We did LHFHG this year for K but I left out the history, burgess books and devotions. I had planned on using LHFHG again for 1st grade and using it in its entirety, with the first grade math and science(Our Fathers World). However, in reading other posts Im concerned that when we move into Bigger she wont be able to enjoy it fully because the activites in the science and math activites won't pertain to the workbooks she will be doing in 2a/2b. But I liked the idea of doing LHFHG again, because right now she falls into the youngest age bracket for each guide. By the time she gets to rev to rev she will just be 11(6th grade) isn't that too young? I'd rather repeat aguide now if needed than later on. I just dont know what to do  .
So to summarize my predictament, will doing math 1a/1b and Our Fathers world w/LHFHG affect the activities in Beyond with 2a/2b wonderful Works?

We are doing LHFHG with Singapore 1a/1b this year for 1st! We took LHFHG slowly for K, which is why we are finishing it up for most of 1st. I didn't want my second DS to get to Bigger before 3rd grade as it is a big jump in writing skills/notebooking, etc. from Beyond to Bigger. Anyway, here is what we are doing for 1st with LHFHG:
Thinking Skills, Grade 1
A Reason for Handwriting A
Emerging Readers (with schedule and questions that are in the Beyond Appendix)
Our Father's World Science (in addition to the rest ofThe World God Made b/c he always begged for more!)
Various History read-alouds from the appendix in LHFHG
Singapore 1a/1b (with the hands-on activities in Beyond)

If I were in your shoes, especially b/c your DD is on the lower end of the age range, I would go back through LHFHG doing all the history, Burgess books, and devotions/Bible. Add in 1st grade math (you will need the Beyond guide if you want the hands-on activities to go with it). You will always have to use the next guide up until Level 3A to get the hands-on activities, so that is the only thing you would have to juggle a bit. Our Father's World is actually scheduled in the appendix of LHFHG, so you would just read that instead of The World God Made for the science reading assignments, but still do the same activities that are scheduled. When she moves on to Beyond, you would use God's Wonderful Works for science, so that shouldn't be an issue in that area.

Does any of this make sense? Hope I haven't confused you further and have helped a little bit! :D

Yep, I agree with 3sweeties. Science in LHFHG and Beyond do not use the same texts. The only difficulty that arises is that if you want to use the hands-on activities for math, you'll be using two guides for a couple of years. . The hands-on activities for Sing Prim 1A/B are in Beyond, and the hands-on activities for 2A/2B are in Bigger.

We are finishing up LHFHG with the 1st grade options. We used the Beyond manual to do the math activities for Sing Prim 1A/1B, Emerging Readers schedule/questions, and Spelling List 1. It was a bit of juggling between manuals, but overall, I was very pleased because it fit my son exactly where he was at.

Next year for Beyond, we'll be doing Singapore 2A/2B - so I purchased the Bigger manual to do the math activities. We'll use God's Wonderful Works for science, finish up the Emerging Readers, and do Spelling List 2 as in the Beyond Manual.

When we get to Bigger (probably a year and a half later... we are doing a 4-day schedule to stretch things out) we'll do it as written with Singapore 3A/3B - there are no hands-on activities for this level so I won't have to purchase the next guide. I'll just use the alternate schedule in the back of the manual for 3A/3B. We'll have already completed Spelling List 2, so we'll begin the dictation passages as provided in the Bigger manual. So from that point on I won't have to juggle 2 guides.

Hope that helps!

I would say do it again, especially since your DD is on the younger side. The History, Devotions and Storytime are
great, and it will lay an awesome foundation to build upon for the other guides. We did LHFHG for 1st and used all the first grade options. It was a perfect fit. I did buy the Beyond guide for the Singapore hands on activities.

The Family Time Bible and Storytime have been such a blessing to our family, and my children have trouble listening without pictures, but I've seen them grow so much this year.

Hope that helps :D

I would do LHFHG again with the first grade options. To me it sounds like you just did the math, handwriting, phonics, and fine motors skills. Without doing the right side you really didn't do the program. My ds is doing Bigger in 3rd grade with 3a/3b and he just uses the schedule in the appendix. You can always get the Beyond guide so you can do the hands on for 1a/1b, and the emergent readers if needed.

If you left those out, I'd say you haven't really done it yet... I'm just teasing of course, But if I were you, I would definitely do it again as written. If you are up to 1A / 1B in math you will need to either use the textbooks or get the Beyond guide for the activities in it. You will need Beyond for the following year anyway so you're just buying ahead, KWIM? If you have already done. You would be working out of 2 guides for the next couple of years, but I've done it and it's really no big deal.

I agree with netpea. The Burgess books, devotion, and even science are really great and it will make for a great year. I would look at the placement chart too and see where she's at. Does she already read pretty well? Is she very solid in handwriting? Because to me, those are some of the difference in the level that's required between the two. There is copywork and spelling words in Beyond. If your DD isn't ready for those, it's probably best to wait another year.

I saw someone else on here comment that the reason there are actually only going to be 11 guides once HOD goes all the way through High School, is because generally there comes a time when you can't finish a whole guide in a year. Or like you're doing now, you would repeat one with some changes. I think, especially at this young age, it's more important to have your child place solidly in the guide. Beyond is not the same as LHFHG with different readings. There are more skills required and more time required (I haven't actually started Beyond but I have a couple of close friends who have used it). So if your DD is ready for that, great, if not, LHFHG would give her confidence and I can definitely testify that it's a great year!

Thank you all for the reassurance with my original plan. I just didn't want to make a mistake as I am the only one in my area using HOD. So excited to really do LHFHG as written. Although we did do the storytime, and devotions I just used the LHTH set. I loved LHTH ABC dev. I just couldn't let it go yet :D . Now I think we are ready to move on when our new school year starts.

You have 2 4 year olds and 2 1 year olds? Twins I guess? Not to pry into your personal life, just read your signature.

What fun! What a blessing from the Lord!

My youngest DD had just turned 1 last fall when we started LHFHG. I had almost no challenges with homeschooling (I mean there was the occasional attitude, but in general my kids enjoyed and loved LHFHG immensely and it was so amazing to see them learn and grow throughout the year). My challenges were all based on my 1 YO. What she was doing, or what she should do while school was going on. I wish you great blessings from the Lord in managing your family and having a great year with homeschool!
