Singapore and LHFHG question

Post by Dustybug » Wed Jul 13, 2011 2:43 pm

Okay, so since we are only 8 or so weeks away from starting LHFHG, I've been looking through the materials trying to get my game plan in order. When I was looking of the math plans and the Singapore Early bird books, I realized that DD is WAY beyond all the activities in the 2A book. So, I anticipate breezing through that part. DD loves to ask for more in areas that she excels in, and math is no different. What should I do then? The math schedule as planned wouldn't really challenge her until we got into the 2B book, and even some of that will be easy for her. Should I still just follow the math plans, or double up on some lessons so that we can get to the more meaty (for her) stuff sooner? I want it to be a challenge, but not too difficult, but I also do not want it to be boring for her because it is stuff she already knows. She wouldn't be ready for 1A/1B yet.

I think you could either do multiple lessons until you come to newer material, or just skip to a spot later in 2A. I started at the end of 2A (measurement, I think?) with my ds when he was almost 5. He is not one to want to do extra of anything involving writing, so that worked better for us. We started 1A slowly (less tha a lesson a day) when he finished and I bought the Beyond guide to use the math activities. So I have a different sticky-tab for our spot in math, but that doesn't bother me. HTH :D

As your dd is only 5 yo, and Singapore is already considered a year advanced, I'd be careful about not moving too fast with her. :D Though many dc have down their simple addition/subtraction facts, it is the skills of measurement, money, time, missing addends, etc. that Earlybird 2A/2B covers so well that they still need to learn. Singapore does have a different way of teaching things, so making sure dc are learning to approach problems with the mental math methods Singapore teaches intact is key to success with Singapore. :D I would probably try to ensure thorough coverage by doing EB 2A somehow, whether that means doubling up and doing 2 lessons a day, or just doing a lesson a day and calling it good. :D My ds is (and always has been) very good at math. He is in sixth grade next year, and will do 5B/6A. It has been challenge aplenty for him. :D I guess even though she COULD do the harder work of a more difficult level now, I just wouldn't want her to get ahead of herself so that the future math becomes too hard. It's pretty challenging.

I would also suggest going through 2A a little faster just to make sure that the topics have been covered. You could just tell her it's a fun review, since she likes math anyway. My oldest is in Bigger and she's in a different place for math then she is in the rest of the program so I just have a post-it where she is for math. The way I see it, I'm just following along with what she needs as far as math goes right now, and we can always slow down when we need to. So if you need to speed it up, and then slow down when you get to 1A, then go for it!
