Balance for high schooler

Post by deltagal » Tue Jul 05, 2011 1:28 pm

My high school freshman will be doing parts of RTR and a few outside courses. I want to make sure he's not overloaded. What is a good guideline for maximum hours of study each day?

My high schooler usually worked about 4- 4 1/2 hrs a day. That included his reading. He loved to read his history/lit books to little brother. :) He would occasionally need longer for research, writing longer papers, etc. However, he often did that in the evenings.

Technically high schoolers should work the equivalent of 120 hours on a subject for it to be considered a credit. For classes that don't have a "high school" text book and are more Charlotte Mason style I use this as my guide so I expect her to work 50-60 minutes a day on a subject depending on how many days a week she does it. There are some subjects that she finished an entire high school level text and only worked 30-45 minutes a day due to how fast she reads and works. She worked around 5 hours last year, but this year as an 11th grader I think she will work around 5 1/2 to 6 hours at least, but she is taking some hard classes like Physics , French 3 and British Lit.
