Algebra Suggestions

Post by kwingard » Fri Jul 01, 2011 1:34 pm

Hello Everyone! I am new to HOD. This will be our 3rd year homeschooling. I have 2 boys, 12 and 9 (7th and 4th grade). I have chosen to tackle 2 guides (RtR and Preparing). My next assignment is to find a pre-algebra/algebra program, or higher level math program for my 7th grader. We have used MUS up til now, and I will continue MUS with my 9yo. Prior to homeschooling, my boys used Saxon. However, after some research, I felt it best to find a new program for the upper level math. I am all ears on your opinions on this!! :D I have considered VideoText Algebra, but have read several reviews where it "leaves holes". TT appears to be "weak". So I am asking you, the experts, for your insight on this process! Thank you in advance, Kelly

We loved Teaching Textbooks. My oldest used it for Alg 1 &2 and Geo. Not weak at all.

At HOD, we'll be scheduling Singapore's Discovering Mathematics Series to continue on after 6A/6B. We are also leaning toward scheduling Videotext as another option for Pre-Algebra/Algebra on up. :D

These threads may be of help to you as you ponder: :D

Thank you, Carrie, for your response. I have read the links you attached. I have confidence in knowing you have explored and researched many options for higher level math, and will trust in that as I move forward in purchasing VideoText. Will you happen to have separate lesson plans available for purchase for VideoText? Just curiuous. I will be doing RtR with my 12 yo this year, but will not be using the suggested math box with him, obviously, if we are using VT.
Thank you so much,
Kelly

I didn't read the links (will do), but I'm curious why VT? We did not care for it and LOVED Teaching Textbooks.

ETA: OK, read the 2nd link and understand your reasons. Thanks for explaining!
