If you read through the introduction here: http://www.heartofdakota.com/pdf/PHFHG-intro.pdf
It will give you ideas on what sorts of notebooks are recommended.

It's fun to be a the gathering supplies stage! :D I like to read through the Introduction (even if I've previously done the guide), as it is an excellent way to prepare for the year. I jot what I choose for materials in the margin as I read, and then put together my shopping list. :) I chose to do the staircase timeline, so I halved some small index cards for that. I bought a 3 ring binder with tabs and clear sleeves. My ds put his notebooking in a section, his experiment lab reports in another, his poetry in another, and I snapped pictures of his history projects (his favorite projects are still on display in his room ). We bought a recipe box and index cards with ABC tabs for his vocabulary as well as a good, thick Webster's dictionary. We also bought composition books with lines, and picked out a neat all-boy looking Common Place book (we got this at Master's Books). Lots of typing paper, some colored construction paper, scissors, a ruler, some index cards, some washable paint, markers, glitter, glue - your basic art stuff. That was it! The rest of it we had on hand in our kitchen or bathroom. I also like to go through the Appendix, as that is just good information to have read through. Many excellent teaching tips are included that just help us teach our dc skills well. HTH, and happy getting ready for PHFHG! :D

I liked Julie's post on Bigger so much (I was sad that I started Bigger before she did) :( , I may try to copy her idea in getting ready for Preparing! If that works I will do my best to take pictures and post them :D :D
If anyone else has pictures of getting ready for Preparing, please share :P :P :P

Just wondering here about the index cards for vocabulary in Preparing. ` My two boys are writing in cursive, but the smaller lines on notebook paper, (not college rule, but the wide rule) are still too small for them. They prefer writing larger and do a better/neater job at that as well. Are the 3x5 cards large enough to include everything they need for their vocabulary or should I go for the 4x6 index cards instead? Anybody have any ideas on this?
Thanks!

Starla,
We used 3 x 5 cards with Riley in Bigger Hearts, and that worked well for him. PHFHG follows the same format for vocabulary words that Bigger Hearts does, but the skill level is increased, as the words are more difficult and there are more of them. The vocabulary cards follow a similar format each time. They include the writing of a definition, using the word in a sentence, and drawing a picture of the meaning of the word. We put the picture on one side, and the writing on the other. Here are some examples of Riley's...
"Duel" is the vocab word:

"Exhibit" is the vocab word:
