Notebooking with Little Hearts??

Ladies,

My 7 year old is going to start LHFHG with his sister....I am VERY happy with the books and content! Though this guy is using Beyond 3 R's skills he wants and needs to do a little more with the content. He envies what his brother is doing with Bigger in the history & science notebooking and lab sheets. He also wants to do the vocabulary!! Has anybody come up with a way to incorporate some HOD notebooking into LHFHG that would encourage drawing/sketching, coloring, writing, labeling, etc.? I'm not talking about anything HUGE....but something consistent, that ties in with our Unit themes, and beefs up the skill work for a kiddo who CRAVES it . I'm poised to begin working on this myself but thought I'd ask if anybody has done this for an older child using LHFHG. This guy is a rising first grader but he is actually repeating first grade. He moved into his first grade work very comfortably in the late winter. He just wasn't quite ready at the start of the last school year. He is flying now. In a perfect world I'd put him in Beyond but running 3 guides is not going to work this year. There's no reason to rush him anyway since he's a first grader on paper this year !! He can ENJOY LHFHG....with some home made extensions .

I gratefully welcome your ideas for "home made extensions" for LHFHG in the history/Bible and science/Bible areas!!

I will be using LHFHG in the fall, so I can't go on personal experience, but I would think that it wouldn't be too hard to add a little notebooking. If there is an interesting person in the story, you could find an image online and print it out on paper. Then he could write the person's name and a few words or pictures depicting things he learned about the person. You could do that for an event as well. It's very easy to find maps online. He could use a colored pencil and draw in the route that some person or group took. Science topics would work really well for that too. I made a lot of notebooking pages for my ds in the past. It's very easy with the online resources that are available now.

I think I will be using LHFHG with my 7 yo . I am planning to use the coloring book that goes with the history book ( Little Pilgrims) and add printable notebooking for some of the stories we read in that book . There are many sites that offer free notebooking pages ( homeschoolshare , homeschoolhelper ) .

I'm so glad that you are working through a good placement fit for your sweeties! You are such a good momma to ponder their education so carefully. One thing I'll share that may be a possibility would be to have your son do a very mini-science lab sheet for one of the science/experiment activities each week. He could draw the experiment and then write one or two sentences about it.

Another thing that would be excellent for a 7 year old to do would be to copy his Bible verse that he's memorizing each week on some sort of decorative paper that he colors or decorates to post around the house, or else to file in a binder with plastic page protectors. Simply adding those two things weekly would likely be enough notebooking without overwhelming him.

I don't think I'd go to the work of making pre-made pages, but rather let him do the work, as otherwise it becomes a job for you rather than for him. Plus, much learning about layout, design, and artwork comes from a child making his own pages. Anyway, just a thought.
