Excited to begin HOD with Preparing

Post by blessed2five » Wed Jun 01, 2011 5:56 pm

I feel so blessed to have the opportunity to use HOD Preparing with my 9 y/o dd this fall. I have researched and prayed for a curriculum that would fit her where she is and I think I have found it. This will be the first year I am not teaching all my children together so I am a little sad about that, but also excited for this dd 9 to finally be learning exactly at her level of understanding and all centered on God's Word.

I also had the opportunity to meet Julie and Carrie at convention last weekend and spoke at length with Julie about her and her family and love for HOD. She was so sweet, just as I had pictured and I hope to continue to learn from her and everyone else on this board.

I also was wondering if some of you veteran Preparing moms could give me some planning advice as far as what type of supplies work best to organize the student's work. I have looked in the manual but haven't really written down what I will need as far as notebooks, paper etc.

Also, how to you keep your manual intact while it is constantly being used by a 9 y/o? For example, for the independent Bible study do you literally hand your dc the manual to take to a quiet place or do you have them sit at the kitchen table? This is the only part of Preparing I can't just picture in my mind how it is going to work with her having to go back and forth to the manual, so I thought you may all have a system you would like to share.

Thank you in advance!

I have not done Preparing but will start in 4 weeks. :) We just had box day today! I am planning on taking my TM and having the binding removed to I can put it in page protectors then put it in a 3 ring binder.

We will have to keep in touch since we will both be doing Prepare with our daughters!

Welcome! You will LOVE Preparing! I am half way through with my 9yr old dd and I am learning so much and she is enjoying it too

I have found the manual stays together quite well....we do all our reading together on a lounge, her bookwork at the dining table and she takes the manual to her room for her quiet time.

In regards to organising her work, I have 2 x 3-ring binders with plastic sleeves and dividers for the various subjects (Ind. History & LA in one folder and the various components of Science in another : Questions/Experiments/Notebook pages). She also has her commonplace book for copywork. I print out lined pages from DonnaYoung.org for when she needs that. Fairly simple!

Enjoy your time together. HOD is amazing....

Blessings,

Thank you Karen for the 3 ring binder idea. My dd is pretty rough with her books and the thought of her disappearing with my guide is frightening! Putting the pages in protectors sounds like a great summer project for my older daughter.

I can't wait to get the rest of my order I placed at convention last week!

Thank you

Corrie,

Thank you for the information on how to organize our papers. I guess I need to start making a list of everything I need!

I'm glad to hear such glowing reports about Preparing and I can't wait to get started.

Hi Emily! :D It's good to see you here, and I enjoyed talking with you too! :D We loved PHFHG so much too, and I am excited I get to teach it again to my middle ds this coming year. I like to read through the "Introduction" and the Appendix teacher parts of each HOD guide I am using to get ready for my HOD year. I usually do it with my favorite cup of coffee, when my dc are quiet (which means when they are in bed sleeping soundly  ). Here are a few PHFHG specific threads that may be helpful as you get ready for your year...

Supplies for PHFHG:

PHFHG time it takes:

HTH- and happy reading and planning as you prepare for PHFHG! :D

Thank you for the warm welcome. I can't wait to get started. I am actually looking into using one of the other guides for my upcoming ninth grade ds. He really wants to study American history so I'm not sure how that would work out. I had planned on him starting in Ancients with MFW, but the HOD upper guides look so good!!

Emily,

We just finished Preparing and loved it! Looks like many of your questions have been answered. I thought I'd mention that for Bible Time my dd only did this independently when the guide recommended it (they had the student fill in the prayer "blanks"). There were times we discussed the material further in the Independent boxes but I tried to let her become more independent as the year went on.

Enjoy the year! Preparing was our best yet!
