Timeline Help

Post by jcmi » Wed Jun 01, 2011 6:28 am

Beyond and Preparing just arrived yesterday---yay! I'm already looking forward to next year and also can't wait to see Revival to Revolution when it arrives.

I'm wondering, though, about the timeline in Preparing. I don't have a door anywhere near our school area to hang a timeline, and since I'll have two boys in Preparing I want each to have their own. What alternatives do I have to a timeline that hangs on the wall? I'm looking for something easy to manage as one of my boys has fine moter issues due to cerebral palsy, and something that needs to be folded and re-folded each time it's used would be a disaster. :D I'm also hoping for frugal as I will need one for each boy.

Any suggestions? Visuals would be *extremely* helpful!

Thanks,

Jen

Hi Jen!

Maybe give each of them a space of wall either in their rooms or the area where you do school? We just cut index cards in half and used the back of the door in our school room for the timeline. We did run out of room halfway through, so I am going to have to "reconfigure" it this summer!

The other option would be to make a "folder" timeline. I got this idea from another HOD user when we went through Bigger: http://daisyhomeschoolblog.blogspot.com ... igger.html

HTH a little bit! I'm sure some of the other wonderful ladies here will chime in with other ideas too!!! :D

We just did ours in the accordian style and stored them. It was nice because when we wanted to stretch out and display it for a short time we could, but it didn't take up any space.
I've done all the guides now with at least one child and still feeling the HOD LOVE. LOL!

The accordian style just wouldn't work with my son with cerebral palsy---he couldn't manage it, and I want something he can use on his own. But the file folder link looks promising. Would this work with Preparing? Would there be enough room for all of the entries needed?

I'm also looking at this: (Link removed by moderator per board rules outlined in "Welcome"). Would this work with Preparing? I like the format, but since I haven't used Preparing yet I'm not sure if it would be suitable.

Thanks!

Jenni

We put our PHFHG timeline in our coat closet in our entryway and loved that! :D You can see ours here on pages 12 and 13 of the PHFHG Photobook. Ours is still up, and it's been 3 years ago that my ds did that guide. The beauty of doing a timeline like this is there is no flipping! Which works great with PHFHG being a one year sweep through history - it can all be seen at a glance. We referred to it (and still refer to it) often. It was not a big deal not to have it in the kitchen/dining room area, which is where we school. HTH!

Agreeing with Julie that it doesn't "have" to be in or near your school room.

But we didn't do the accordion style or the door method. We just used the wall. I already had a black horizontal ribbon up on the wall so we just lined them up like boxcars on the wall. Not pure CM, and for some kids they need the stairstep method; but for my dd that is what she asked for. You can see some pictures of it at my blog http://quietlyrunningtheracehomeschooli ... eline.html

Or another thought with a ds with cerebral palsy- what about putting them on a large posterboard size pad like they have for kindergarten paintings on an easel and glue or tape them in stairstep style like the manual suggests but have each section on a different page?

Don't worry, God is faithful to show us creative ideas for each situation! Praying you have that "a-ha" moment for this too. :D

Thanks for all of the great ideas!!

One more question: Approximately how many cards/entries will the timeline have? This will help me to figure out how much room I need.

Thanks again!

I had another thought this morning. What about putting a clear table cloth down on your table and then tape the cards down like you would if it was on a door (stair step style). You can then cover the whole thing with another table cloth to protect it while doing school or eating.

Just a random idea.

Don't have an exact answer but so far we are in Unit 20 and have 30 timeline cards thus far.

Thanks for all of the great ideas!!

Again, just wondering if anyone knows approximately how many entries the timeline in Preparing will have. Edie says 30 by unit 20....can anyone with a finished timeline chime in? That's reasonably small---not worth buying a timeline notebook for. I think I can manage to find room somewhere in the kitchen. I really like the clothespin idea!

I counted ahead in my Guide and if I added correctly it was 63. They are half of an index card for each one.
