PHFHG Question

Post by Mom2Monkeys » Sun May 29, 2011 2:50 pm

My 5th grade DD will do PHFHG this fall (plus extension readings without the follow ups). I have seen Carrie mention several times about how CM advocated that children 9 and older should read their lessons themselves if able. Since she is in PHFHG on her own in the ext range, and not with a younger sibling, should I have her reading more on her own than just the Ind. history and science boxes? I don't mind reading it to her, but should I have her reading more on her own? If so, what and how much (all or share the reading)? I'm not ready for her to be all on her own, so I'd still take part in it with her I just want to make sure doing it correctly!

Really quick wanted to let you know if you look at the sample week you will see the letters (T), (I) and (S) in the corner. The (T) is for the teacher to do w the student, (I) is to be done by the student independently, and the (S) is for the teacher to start the student on the task. (S) stands for semi-independent. PHFHG is a stepping stone to independence. It is meant to help teach the student to work more independently. I think 9yo is not in the extension age range. Everything done in each guide is done for a reason. The author is very gifted to understand the age range targeted. I am sure others will chime in, I just wanted to give some food for thought. :-)

I just want to clarify...a 9yo could do the extions, according to ability. Each child truly is placed by ability. I am not sure however that it is needed. I just wanted to give you confidence that the guides are well thought out for this age range. ;-)

Thanks...but I actually already own it (and all the fuides and bioks from levels prior!) and have done a few units!:) I just wanted to be sure since she is in 5th grade, and plenty capable of reading them on her own, and Carrie has mentioned multiple times about CM's thoughts about kids reading their own readings starting around this age. She 'could' do CTC but she is a dawdler and can't be trusted with the poetry painting on her own right now! My walls would be colorful! Ha! If we'd decided to go ahead with CTC she would be reading them herself. Actually, had my DH not had me enroll them in public school this past semester she would be starting CTC about midway through first semester.

And she will be 10 June 15 ;)

I am planning on having DD read the "Read Alouds" out loud to me. Should I not be doing this?

I did it just as scheduled in the guide with my then 10 year old and here is why. I think Carrie has it planned so that in Preparing they are starting to take over their own reading by doing the Independent History box and the science reading on their own.So she is following what Charlotte Mason talks about. Since this is their first year doing this it is more than enough for them to start learning the skills needed to then move in to CTC where they then add the History Reading independently. The reading in Preparing is not as challenging so it helps them learn the needed skills of starting to glean things from the reading. The history reading in CTC is much more challenging, but after a year of Preparing they are ready for it. Carrie just has it all planned out to push them in the perfect way towards independence incrementally. I hope that makes sense.
My 3 luvs I am not sure which read alouds you are talking about. If you are talking about storytime then no at this level I would not have your dd read them to you.It is written for you to read them to her. I think it isn't until RTR or above that Carrie says the dc can read them on their own if you wish them to do that. I love our storytime time and since by RTR he is doing so much on his own I plan on continuing with storytime with me reading it to him as long as he will let me.

This is a good point...Perhaps as we near the mid and end of the year, I may start sharing the reading with her...take turns reading by switching paragraph by paragraph or page by page, as she will be nearly 11 then plus, she will get a head start on training for CTC! :)

Hi Tamara - I agree with LynnH, and I think PHFHG will be good training for CTC as your dd will take over half of the reading of history, and all of the science reading in PHFHG. :D You could haver her take over more of the history later in the year if you wanted and felt she was ready, though I am willing to bet you will be totally unable and unwilling to give up reading "Grandpa's Box". :D :D :D What a great read aloud that one is!

As far as my3luv's question, you would want to have your dd read her Drawn into the Heart of Reading books aloud to you (at least 3-4 pages as the DITHOR guide mentions), as this will be her reading instruction. :D The Storytime books are meant to be read aloud by you at this age. :D Later, in RTR on up, Storytime can either be read aloud by you or read silently by the student. HTH! :D
