Writing assignments in Preparing??

I am trying to nail down my LA/writing goals and plans for the next couple of years. Could you please give some examples of the types and frequency of writing assignments in Preparing Hearts? Would it be possible to also list a couple of examples?

I am bumping this up because I was wondering if there were other writing assignments besides what is in Rod and Staff.

Igniting Your Writing has been recommended for those who want or need more writing. (in Bigger...) It is available in the HOD book shop.

The sample week of "Preparing..." will be up by the end of April, so you'll be able to see some more specific examples there.

Each week there will be a weekly written narration lesson where the student will be required to read a portion of a chapter, will have leading questions that the parent will discuss with them about what they read, and then they will have a guided writing session where they will write a short, written narration. This type of writing will come mainly from nonfiction sources.

For the creative writing session each week, students will be working from the poetry of Robert Louis Stevenson to rewrite a portion of one of his poems or write from the topics studied in his poems. These lessons will be guided by the parent as well. Stevenson's poetry is an excellent starting point for this type of writing, as he writes about things that all children have experience with and can relate to. This type of writing will be mainly descriptive.

Students will also be creating a history and a science notebook during the year and begin keeping a Charlotte-Mason style common place book (providing a common place to keep quotes, Scripture verses, and passages that are memorable and timeless). A variety of copywork will also be scheduled almost daily, along with the additional writing lessons provided in Rod and Staff English.

Thank you, so much. As you probably have figured out from most of my posts, I am a loooong-term planner (can't help myself

) and figuring out the LA portion has really been driving me nuts lately (we need a smiley face ripping out hair,

!). Thanks again for being so gracious to answer these posts.

Glad to help! Language arts is one of those toughie areas that can easily consume a homeschool day if we're not judicious in selecting where the time goes! I know this from my own over the top planning in the past with my oldest son!

I'm SOOOO excited about the sample week of Preparing. I just can't wait. Its better than Disney World! Everytime I read about what Carrie is putting in Preparing I get even more convinced that this is the curriculum for us.
