Rod and Staff English and Standardized testing
Rod and Staff English and Standardized testing
I really appreciate the way does English! However, we are in a state (after a move last year) where we have to test. I have a 10 year old who will be starting R&S 4 in his technically 5th grade year. Testing wise, will he be okay to only have 1/2 year of the 4th grade book behind him for the 5th grade test? Or should I do full pace on the 4th grade book?
Thanks,
Polly

Re: Rod and Staff English and Standardized testing
R&S English is advanced. I think a 5th grader using 4th should test fine as long as he is learning the material.

My dd8 is using R&S 2 for 3rd grade this year. We are only 2/3 of the way through the book, yet when she took the CAT last week language mechanics and language usage and structure were her two highest sections! I don't think you will have to worry about R&S not preparing him for testing.

Re: Rod and Staff English and Standardized testing
Thank you for your replies. Should I have him do it 1/2 speed as the manual suggests it gull speed so he would only finish 1/2 the book in his 5th year?

I'd follow how Carrie has it planned.

Re: Rod and Staff English and Standardized testing
R & S English is an outstanding program, and it is considered advanced. That being said, what you have done before for grammar will make a difference in ds's testing as well, as one year of something can help dc make good gains, but it is not the the same as multiple years of instruction with R & S English. HOD suggests trying to complete R & S English 6 by the end of Grade 8 (as R & S English 7 and 8 are high school credit worthy). So, I would say you have a few options...
Option 1:
Ds's fifth grade year: half of English 4
Ds's sixth grade year: other half of English 4
Ds's seventh grade year: English 5
Ds's eight grade year: English 6
Option 2:
Ds's fifth grade year: English 4
Ds's sixth grade year: half of English 5
Ds's seventh grade year: other half of English 5
Ds's eighth grade year: English 6
Option 3:
Ds's fifth grade year: English 4
Ds's sixth grade year: English 5
Ds's seventh grade year: half of English 6
Ds's eighth grade year: other half of English 6
I would say I'd do the option that is written in the HOD guide you are using, as this will give good balance to the day. I'm not sure which guide you are using though, and there are several options within a guide. So, I'd then consider what pacing ds seems most well matched with. I hope something here helps!

Thank you, Ladies! This has been very helpful! I think I will do at as Carrie suggests. I prefer gentle and later language arts.
