Need suggestions for summer reading

Post by Tansy » Fri May 20, 2011 3:20 pm

I have noticed My dd2 has been substituting A for i as she is reading along. She is also guessing quiet a bit, She has been reading for enjoyment her sisters House on the prairie books even tho they are a bit to high lvl for her. And the easier ones at her level she is done with in no time.

I'm looking for some books or work sheets, I can put her though again this summer to give her more practice. She is much more of a whole word reader (I think she came pre-wired this way). But I do recognize this might be a "not discriminating the sounds" issue.
as she still has trouble with

w for r
e for i
I for a
a for i
u for o
p for b
b for p

Some of these are sounds (R for example) that she did not hear or learn as an infant the errrr, arrr, sounds are not in Chinese the way we say it, and she messes these up all the time. I tried the rod and staff Hearing and Helping but she has trouble in that book. We live in suburbs and she has no frame of reference for many of the items, not to mention they use odd words.. like pane for window...
Any suggestions?

We are currently using Horizons 2 Reading for my 9 year old (I love your siggy! We have 3 dyslexics in this house. ). The stories are wholesome and do not use the unfamiliar words that we also ran into in the R&S readers, and the program comes with a workbook that has phonics instruction. Just a suggestion. Even if you didn't want to use the readers, just the workbook might be helpful.

BJU also has workbooks with their reading program, although those contain more comprehension questions than phonics if I'm remembering correctly.

You could also just pick up some phonics workbooks like ETC, and have her just continue to read whatever books interest her.

Hi Tansy - hope you had a good date with dh! :D Maybe levels 3-4 of ETC or "Reading Reflex"? Those would be phonics type suggestions, but they are more mature in content. :D Or for reading, could she slowly ready through some of the DITHOR packs of books? Just a few ideas!

My dd8 is having very similar issues and I also was looking for something to use over the summer to help her. I looked through a friend's ETC and think that I am going to try using that. I like the multi-sensory approach that ETC offers (see a picture of the object, say the word, write the word) and was hoping that would help cement the information in her mind.

Yes. At least it was in my post. I'm assuming the others were as well. :)
