Transitioning from Montessori to Singapore

Post by rod_squad » Thu May 19, 2011 6:16 pm

Hi! My 2nd grader has been in montessori for 4 years now and is excelling in math. However, when I gave her the Singapore assesment, she really struggled. Anyone have any thoughts? I thought I would just start at Level 1 and teach her the foundations. Thanks in advance!!

I posted too quickly!! Im wondering if there is another math program that would be a better transition from Montessori. I have heard that SIngapore is hard. I dont want to shy away from challenging math, but I dont want to frustrate her. Thanks.

We switched to Singapore in my dd's 2nd grade year. I did choose to start at the beginning with her (1A) so that I could be sure she learned the singapore methodology. If your dd would not object too strongly and placed somewhere in 1a or 1b, then I would suggest making the change. My dd did three books in one year and eventually "caught up" to where she would have been if we had started in Singapore from the onset. My little ds will have the benefit of being in Singapore from the get go and never have to face that same kind of strange transition. I don't think Singapore is "hard" but starting at the beginning will help see the differences in approach.

Singapore math is considered a year advanced, so starting your 2nd grader in 1A would be just fine! :D I wouldn't let your dd starting in 1A hold you back from using Singapore. It is an outstanding math program! Here are a few links you can read about Singapore that may be helpful...

However, if you choose to use a different math program, that will work just fine with HOD too. HTH!
