6yo narrated back The Door in the Wall to me!

Post by arstephia » Tue Apr 19, 2011 11:48 am

I have been reading Door in the Wall to my kids during our mid-morning "snack" time. (They love cutting up apples into super thin slices, cubes, etc. and it has become our morning snack... at least it is healthy! ) ANYWAY, my 10yo is doing Preparing so that is the read aloud book for that guide. My 12yo son likes to join us for that as does the 6yo (who is doing LHFHG) while she colors. Today we finished the book and as everyone scattered my 6yo said, "Can I tell you all about the book now?" I said sure, not knowing what she meant exactly, and she proceeded to narrate back to me nearly the entire book with amazing detail, yet surprising conciseness. It has taken us a few weeks to read this book, and she was always just doing a puzzle or coloring so I didn't know how much she really understood it. It has a lot of old language/vocabulary but she sure got it! I guess she has heard the other narrate and she has figured out how to do it and do it well! I am just so enjoying all of this. It is good stuff!!!
I've done all the guides now with at least one child and still feeling the HOD LOVE. LOL!

It's always amazing (and exciting!) how much little ones take in from their older siblings' readings. Thanks for sharing! :D

That is awesome! We recently read that book. Guess it just goes to show that you never know what kids are going to pick up and be interested in. :)

Steph,

How wonderful! Narration flows so much more freely from those little ones who begin with that type of method of telling back from the beginning. :D It is amazing how those little ones model what the older children are doing, isn't it! :D

Thanks for sharing! :D

Blessings,
Carrie

Wow! That is so great that she is learning so early how to narrate well. That is going to make her learning path ahead (and your teaching) so much smoother. Awesome! :D
