Tell me the history sequence for HOD again!!

Post by slavila » Fri Apr 04, 2008 7:23 pm

Sorry if this is a repeat question. I know I've read bits and pieces about this on different message boards, but I can't remember where, so I thought I'd come to the source and get a concrete answer.

So, in Little Hands it's an overview of history from creation to modern times, then Beyond and Bigger is American History, and then is Preparing another overview or more American history? And then after Preparing does the 4 year cycle start? And this should take you to 7th or 8th?

I hope this makes sense and hope that someone can answer! TIA!

It can make you dizzy trying to compare programs. Preparing is an overview of world history. So it is like a mini tour of all the periods in one year to help them to piece it together as they go instead of waiting for the light bulb at the end of a 4 year cycle. Then I know someone will give you the thread that Carrie explains all of it but basically after that there are 4 years that do the classic 4 time eras starting with Ancients. The last one is supposed to be 8th up to eighth grade level. Hope that helps! :D

Here's the link to the thread where we lay out the sequence for the guides after "Preparing...":
http://www.heartofdakota.com/board/viewtopic.php?t=190

Also, just to clarify further, "Little Hands..." is a one-year overview of the Bible in chronological order in story form.

"Little Hearts..." is a one year overview of world history with a main emphasis on the Bible and American history and how the 2 fit into the scope of world history. :D

"Beyond..." does early American history only (in people groups) and "Bigger..."does a one-year sweep of all of American history biographically.

So, you can see we are really laying a foundation in Biblical history and American history in the early years and then move into emphasizing Biblical and world history in the later years.

We believe in the layering approach, taking several "snapshots" of the various time periods and allowing connections to be made over time. We believe in the CM approach of slow, steady reading of living books over time, combined with a rich literature experience in all areas.

Blessings,
Carrie

Thank you! That helps a lot. Everything I've read about HOD history I have really liked, but I just couldn't remember all the details. Last fall, I struggled with how I wanted to teach history to my children, should I start with creation? Should I start with American History? Should I do 3 4-year cycles, going more into depth with each one? My mind was racing, and then I read "A Look into Each Subject" on the website and what I read about history just made sense! Amen; it was the answer I had been looking for!! Thanks Carrie!!!

I know how that can be! We struggled with the same thing with our oldest son and actually did the four year history cycle with him first, which led to our realization that it would be better to have a different rotation better suited to younger listeners the next time around. We have found the history rotation in our guides to be much better suited to young children and are really enjoying it with our next kiddos!

Glad to help!
