Hod combines best of everything!! Thank you Carrie & family!

Post by momofjka » Fri Apr 15, 2011 7:43 am

Hi all,
Being new to homeschooling, choosing a curriculum was very difficult. I kept praying and was led to HOD (after being given an old catalog from a friend). I KNEW this was the curriculum for our family, but even after ordering, I was a little concerned that I wouldn't like the CM style of teaching or that it wouldn't be "enough", especially since traditional-style-Abeka was all I knew (that was the curriculum my children had at their private school).

Well, box day arrived, and let me tell you...this was the most amazing curriculum I've ever seen. Not only were the books beautiful (those who like to read will understand my description), but I have never heard or seen of such a perfect blend of styles in one curriculum. It was like Carrie took all the best materials from the different teaching methods and combined them into one amazing program. There are "textbook-like" books for those who need/want more traditional methods, "living books" for those who like CM, structured lesson plans for those who need it (like me), with built in flexibility for those who like to "make it their own". This is amazing. I know now why God led me to this. He knew before I did what my family and I needed. I am so impressed with the quality of enriching material. From what I can see, HOD has strong academic depth in all subjects with the lessons presented in ways that I really feel my children will RETAIN what they learn, not just be able to "regurgitate" facts.

My biggest needs for a curriculum was having it be God-centered, having pre-made lesson plans and structure (I need to be told what to teach and when), have strong & challenging academics in core subjects (Math, English, etc.), AND be fun and engaging for all of my children regardless of learning style. I can see that HOD hits everyone of these...I am so grateful to God for answering my prayer and leading me to this program. I CAN'T WAIT to start schooling in a few months!!!!!!!!! God bless you and your family Carrie, for developing HOD. May the blessings you are sharing with other families be returned to you "pressed down, shaken together, and running over..." spiritually, physically, and financially. MAY YOU BE BLESSED!

Blessings,

Rejoicing with you, Jennifer! I agree with everything you wrote! You sound a lot like me. One thing I have found with HOD is that it is a curriculum that helps you avoid BURN-OUT reallly well. It is so interesting for the mom as well as the child, and so easy to use for us. I just love it! Blessings to you on your first year of homeschool! There will be a transition time for your children, as there was for mine. My children were in Christian school for 2 years prior to coming home (I homeschooled before that but gave up, got burn out  I was using a workbook based approach and my son did NOT like it). Anyway, some of the best advice I got was to take it easy this year with my children academically by not pushing them too hard, and mainly working on becoming more unified again, and working on their character. This has been really beneficial for me, as I can be an A-type personality person when I let myself on some things. But, I have been more relaxed this year, thanks to HOD, and our year has been very good overall.

So, if it is a bit challenging in the beginning, please know that this is a normal part of transitioning. Don't be discouraged. It will certainly get better and better!

I agree with you too! :) The CM methods took me and my dd a little getting used to. At first, coming from traditional, I didn't think it was going to be beneficial. After watching my daughter grow in so many wonderful ways with the CM approach and HOD, after coming from ps and traditional methods, I am totally convinced. Enjoy an amazing first year with HOD!
