Where/When Covered

Post by mrsrandolph » Tue Apr 12, 2011 11:01 pm

I am a curriculum fanatic. This time of year I start getting all freaked out that I am going to "miss something" when teaching my kids. Here is a list of things I am wondering about. We are in Beyond now and are doing it at half speed. Many of the things on this list are probably covered in R&S somewhere. Most are Language Arts concepts. Some may be covered in DITHOR.

Could someone further down the line tell me if/when/where the following are covered. If they are not covered (to your knowledge), could you tell me that too? Thanks!

MY LIST
Story Sequencing
Writing a Letter (friendly, persuasive, etc.)
Alphabetizing
Alliteration
Similies
Metaphors
Contractions
Posessives
Parts of Speech
Articles (a, an, the)
Homophones
Antonyms
Personification
Synonyms
Prefixes
Suffixes
Compound Words
Dictionary Usage
Compare/Contrast (how to)
Homonyms
Venn Diagram (usage...our math uses these some)
Reading a Play
Onomatopoeia
Palindromes

Thanks!!

Shannon,

I can't tell you about all of those things, but many of those we've done this year in Bigger. We've covered metaphors, similes, personification, and onomatopoeia all within the context of poetry study. Dictionary skills and alphabetizing I believe were covered towards the end of R&S2 (we did that last year). Contractions, possessives, parts of speech, articles have all been covered in R&S3. We are getting ready to cover in our last unit of R&S3 letter writing, synonyms, and antonyms. I think possibly homophones are in that last unit too. I just looked at it the other day, but I don't remember everything in that last unit. Dictionary usage is covered again through the vocabulary study every week and also in looking up the character trait each week. Cheerful Cursive also covers alphabetizing and parts of speech a little. Almost all of the items in your list, we have covered to some degree either through poetry study, R&S grammar, storytime, or DITHR and we're just finishing up Bigger! I'm sure the others will follow in future studies. :D

Thanks Patty! Guess who, for the sake of time, often skips poetry study?

We are about 1/3 of the way through Bigger and MOST of those things we've already covered either in Beyond or Bigger :) Near the end of Beyond (maybe?) we wrote a letter I know. That was a headache for me for some reason, so I remember it!! I would occasionally skip poetry in Beyond, but in Bigger it's way more important! You'll see that when you get the guide... there's questions and stuff ;) Dictionary and alphabetizing are in the vocabulary parts of Bigger.

It might help to look at the Table of Contents for the R&S books...you can find them here: http://www.rodandstaffbooks.com/list/Bu ... sh_Series/

Or check R&S's scope & sequence for English here: http://samples.rodandstaffbooks.com/1-19118/#6

I'm not a long-time user but am pretty confident that most, if not all, of your list is covered by HOD itself if not covered by R&S.

I agree with the pps that your list is covered. Take it from one who freaked on the same things, because I didn't see it outwardly. If it's not covered by HOD, it's covered in R&,S and a few times, both. R&S, as I haven't looked at the scope and sequence and I will be doing so, has it in their lesson plans, even some spelling, but it's not in the Table of Contents, so you think it's not covered; but it is. Some of the coverage I didn't even see listed in R&S's index, but lo and behold it was covered. So rest assured, your list is covered. I've seen it and I'm on Preparing.

HI Shannon! We've done everything on your list in HOD. :D I will say it is important to do each box of plans so skills are not missed, but as long as you are doing that, you can check, check, check, check each of these things on your list as "done" with HOD! :D From one list checker to another, I know what joy that can bring. :) Sometimes I put things I've already done on my list, just for the satisfaction it gives to check them off! You're covered though - totally. :)
