? about slowing dd down.
My dd is doing LHFHG this year for K. Her birthday is Oct. 31st, so if she was going to PS here she would be in K this coming fall. The first half of this year she struggled a bit with the storytime, and history. Ever since the February though she is doing excellent with everything in the guide. She loves math, and is doing alright with reading. She tires easily with writing, and reading. Right now we are in unit 27 of LHFHG, and I plan to start Beyond with her when she finishes. Are school year begins in July. What I'm worried about is at this rate she would finish all the guides at 16. I do not want to slow down the guides after Bigger, so I'm wondering how you would go about stretching out Beyond and Bigger for her? I do not want to stretch out the math as that is her favorite, and she is doing great with it. I also want her to be ready for Preparing when we get there. We also school year round, and we end up with about 42 weeks of school.

Re: ? about slowing dd down.
I just started stretching out BIgger for my soon to be 9 yo last week. We are at unit 21. The skill jump going into Preparing would be too much for her, so I needed to do something.
If you look at that thread (I'll see if I can find it) both Carrie and Julie offer an alternate schedule doing a unit at half speed. Using that as a guide may help you. They keep up with Math and don't slow that down, so you could easily do 2 "grades" of math during the time it takes you to go through one guide.

Here it is:

Post #2 is Julie's alt. schedule, and post #3 is Carrie's. I am following Carrie's schedule, and it is going great! It helps greatly with the handwriting stress on her, and we are covering things much better for my dd.

Thanks! I'm wondering if I should try to slow down Beyond as well, so we can get Bigger up to full speed before starting Preparing, or if I should just do Beyond as is, and slow down bigger?

I don't know how many days a week you school, but if you take everything but math & reading/phonics at 4 days a week, (just start day 5 on Monday, etc.) then you end up with 43 weeks of school. Of course then you need to accept having multiple sticky tabs to keep your place in math and reading, but it worked for us for LHFHG, and I plan to do the same for Beyond. I like having a day that we can do different activities or outings or playdates without having to try to "catch up"

Re: ? about slowing dd down.
We school 5 days a week for 42-43 weeks a year. I know I'm a big time over achiever lol! I was thinking of making it 4 days a week, but we would still finish the entire guide in one year, so not sure that would help. Also I would have to think of something else to do on the 5th day. As it is right now my ds will be done with Beyond on Friday, and we don't start are new school year until July. I'm planning on doing some other stuff until our break in June, but the Bigger books on the shelf are calling to me.
