How often do you take a break
How often do you take a break
from school? Do you just wait until somebody gets sick? Do you wait until you are exhausted? Do you follow the public school calendar? Do you plan in advance?

When you say break, are you talking about a week or more? We took off a week to go to Arizona. We take off a week or so when we visit Grandma, and we take days off here and there due to CBS, co-op, doctors apts, or just wonderful weather. Here in MI if the weather is nice you hurry up and get outside, cause it won't last long. We will take off for the summer anywhere from mid-May to mid-June, depending on how the year is going and pick up again anywhere from mid-Aug to after Labor Day, depending on the kids.
And of course when they are sick. Last week was a total loss, two kids with fevers...

This was our first year to hs and here is what we did. We started the last week of August and then took a week off in Sept. to go on vacation. Then we took a week off in Oct. when my ds had croup and had to spend the night in the hospital. We took the week of Thanksgiving off and were off for about 2 1/2 weeks for Christmas.
Since the beginning of the year we have taken a few days off to go to Disneyland and to play at Grandma's. We will probably take a couple more days off before the end of the year. We should be done with Little Hearts by the end of May or 1st week of June. I plan on taking some time off for summer and then begin again in August. HTH!

We school year round and tend to take a good break at summer so my kids get their play with other kids we usually take a month then. But we also like to take time off when dh is off work or at holidays. We took a month off at Christmas time and it was wonderful.
Other thing that really influences me is we have physical therapy every week and sometimes we have a ton of doctor appointments that are fairly far away. Those are times when I lose my mind if I try to do it all and school so I just take off. Some days I just feel like we need a break so we will. We have in extra days this year and we are ending in 20 days in theory for the year. I started Bigger and figured out I got us to the perfect point of being able to do a 4 day week with no tweaking next year to finish Bigger and decided I will do 1 entire day a week of Bible study and fun and 4 days HOD. PERFECT!
Long answer for no real formula but love the freedom of schooling year round!

I hate taking breaks just because we loose the routine and it his hard to get my son back in it. But I really need a break. We will probably study the weather and nature in a very realxed way, plus we are at a good stopping point in Little Hearts. But I SOOOO want to finish LH and start Beyond in the Fall!

Well I really have no schedule. I try to school 4 days a week but that doesn't seem to be happening very often. My main goal is to finish Little Hearts by mid-July. As long as that happens I am completing the book in a year and I am happy. We are just starting unit 26 so I feel like what we are doing is working. There are days that all we do are math and reading and other days we get to everything. I just don't move on until we have done the left side of the page - so we are ahead in math and reading, but he is learning and having fun and that is the most important thing to me.

We have breaks scheduled for Thanskgiving (1 week), Christmas (usually about 10 days), a week sometime in the spring, and some time in the summer. Besides that, we occasionally have an unscheduled day off to enjoy weather or catch up on housework. (not often) And of course, you can't schedule when the kiddos (or mom and dad) will be sick!
My ds was able to keep working when he was sick, with a fever; dd could do nothing but lie on the couch and sleep, and drink lots and lots of juice and water! We lost a whole week when she was sick...
