Copywork ideas to go along with Little Hearts

Post by abrightmom » Wed Mar 30, 2011 7:01 pm

Do you have any ideas or experience with adding copywork to Little Hearts? My middle son will be using Little Hearts with his sister but doing skill work from Beyond. When we begin Little Hearts in the fall he'll need to be doing copywork along the lines of the poetry copywork in Beyond. I'd like to save the Beyond poetry for him to enjoy when they study Beyond together the following school year. I'll spend some time with the Little Hearts materials and see if there is anything inspiring there but perhaps someone else has something lovely to share. :D

I don't have anything lovely to share, but have the exact same question! I'm planning on doing LHFHG with my older two next year and will need to choose something for DS to use for copy work.

RIght now, I'm thinking that I'll have him copy out his memory verse for the week. I'd love to hear some other ideas though!

The memory verse is a good idea. I was thinking possibly Queen's? They have some nice age appropriate coprywork books that wouldn't overwhelm or add too much time to the day.

This is just an idea :D

DD is working in Little Hearts. She is doing A Reason For Handwriting, so she is not doing any other copywork. The Rhymes In Motion verses in Little Hearts would be an option similar to the poetry in Beyond. That is probably what I would have dd do if she needed some other writing.HTH

~scriptures (memory verse or parts of the Psalms)

~famous quotes (easily found with a google search, could use quotes from some of the founding fathers, famous people like Laura Ingalls Wilder, missionaries ect.)

~exerpts from books you are reading (the Thornton Burgess books always have lots of cute little poems in them)

~songs (we found a song about Pilgrims when reading about Pilgrims and my dd copied that and made a book our of the different stanzas)

~Goerge Washington's "Rules of Civility" (if you haven't read these, they are quite humorous!)

~Maybe a list of manners (Emily Post comes to mind, but I'm sure there are others)

~hymns

Anyway, this is just a list I came up with off the top of my head. I'm sure there are MANY other great ideas out there.

One thing that we have been doing every week is placing my ds his art in a picture story book. You can paste the art work or science (some weeks) on a page and have them copy part of the "key idea" on the line paper on the opposite page. My ds is not ready yet for copy work (we are doing ARFH K), so I have him trace a couple of simple words and he loves it! It is meaning full since it goes with the art and usually bible reading. I don't have a picture of his handy, but here is a picture of my older son his art book copywork.

I have used Draw Write Now. There are pictures to draw and simple sentences to write that go along with the picture.

We used a book like moederjte did for the Bible verse. My dc wrote the verse and then illustrated it. We started that in LHFHG and have continued that through this year in Bigger. Illustrating it has helped them remember the verses. We have occasionally come across a verse that they did before, and it surprises me that they remember. They usually remember the picture that they drew with it, can flip through their books, and find the verse from several years ago. It's fun looking back over the books and seeing how far they have come in their writing and drawing, and it is so wonderful to know that they are remembering those verses! :D

This is a great idea. DD LOVES art but HATES handwriting. :) Maybe if I can make it "art..."

So, we may check out the DWN books too!

Hi, my son loves writing (5), so everyday I ask what he wants to write about and then we come up with a simple sentence for him to copy. Then I write some words that he has been learning on his phonics program for fixation. Also if he is doing the emerging readers you can use some sentences or words from the books you are reading. So we write about 3 or 4 lines a day on his notebook. We have been doing this for about 3 months and I have seen tremendous improvement on his handwriting. I wish I had a before and after sample to show you.... Well, hope it helps!

We added in copywork to LHFHG as I also wanted to save the poetry copywork for when we do the history side of Beyond next year. We were also doing spelling list 1 from Beyond so I was having her copy simple sentences that included a word from the spelling list each day. Sometimes I'd have her copy a sentence about what we would be doing that day. Now I usually have her copy a sentence from the Burgess books we're reading in Storytime. She really likes that because she does her copywork first thing in the morning and it gives her a little teaser about the day's story. She can't wait for storytime and likes to point out when I read her copywork from the chapter. :)

Lots of good ideas here. I would have never thought of having her copy any of the key ideas.

Excellent idea! :D Love this! :D A great, meaningful way to add copywork if you so desire it for your dc at this age. :)
