How exciting! You're going to enjoy it! We're halfway through Beyond and loving it!
We have used
various household items (cotton balls, milk, playdoh, flashlight, shortening, water, paint, construction paper, foil, glue, etc.). It's very easy to swap out most of the supplies - like you plan to do with masking tape & sidewalk chalk. However a few activities are very specific to the project (i.e. the day we were instructed to make ice cream!)
You can easily read ahead through the box on the left page, left bottom corner as that is where most of the supplies are used. I read ahead a week and add any supplies we need to my shopping list of anything that I can't swap out.
I found it helpful to have lots of
3x5 blank index cards for my ds's spelling words and memory verse. I also use Post-It notes to keep our place in the history/read-aloud books and I also use them to write the Bible verse that goes with the godly character trait (Storytime box) and move it week to week through the genres.
We use wide-ruled notebook paper for his copywork and keep it in a 3-ring binder when he's finished.
